Chapter 1: The Door I Should Have Opened Sooner

The last thing I expected to find minutes before my wedding was the woman I loved hurting the little girl I promised to protect.

Nearly two hundred people were waiting inside the ballroom of the Magnolia Ridge Estate outside Nashville. The chandeliers were glowing. The string quartet was playing softly. The smell of fresh roses filled every corner of the venue.

Everything looked perfect.

At least, that was what I believed.

I stood at the end of the hallway in my black tuxedo, checking my watch for the third time.

“Five minutes, James,” my best friend Marcus said, adjusting his tie.

“You’re about to become a married man.””

I smiled because I was supposed to.

Because everyone expected me to.

Vanessa and I had spent eighteen months planning that day. She had chosen the flowers, the decorations, the menu, even the tiny details on the wedding invitations.

She had told me more than once that she couldn’t wait to officially become Lily’s stepmother.

And I believed her.

Because I wanted to believe her.

My six-year-old daughter was supposed to be the center of the ceremony. She was carrying the rings down the aisle in her little white flower-girl dress, a dress she had spent weeks talking about.

“Daddy, everyone is going to look at me,” she had told me that morning.

I had laughed and fixed the small bow in her hair.

“They’re going to look at you because you’re the most important girl here.””

She had smiled.

Then she hugged me tightly.

But now she was missing.

At first, I thought she was hiding because she was nervous.

That was something Lily did whenever there were too many people around. She would find a quiet corner, take a few deep breaths, and come back when she felt ready.

So I checked the hallway.

Nothing.

The restroom.

Empty.

The garden behind the venue.

Only the sound of wind moving through the trees.

My smile disappeared.

“Where is she?”” I asked.

Marcus looked around.

“She was just with the flower girls.””

“I know. That’s why I’m worried.””

A wedding coordinator approached us.

“Mr. Carter, the ceremony is starting soon.””

“My daughter is missing.””

Her expression changed immediately.

“We’ll help you look.””

I walked faster.

Every second felt heavier.

Then I heard it.

A sound that made my entire body stop.

A child crying.

Not a normal cry.

A scared cry.

A cry I knew better than my own voice.

“Lily?””

The sound came from behind the bridal suite door.

My heart started pounding.

I reached for the handle.

The door opened.

And the world changed.

Vanessa was standing in the middle of the room.

My daughter was backed against the wall.

Her face was wet with tears.

And Vanessa’s hand was still raised.

The sound came a second later.

SLAP.

I froze.

For one impossible moment, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

Then Lily stumbled backward.

“Vanessa!””

My voice shook the entire room.

She turned.

The color drained from her face.

“James…”

But she didn’t look guilty.

She looked caught.

That was somehow worse.

Lily covered her cheek with both hands.

“Daddy…”

I crossed the room instantly.

I pulled her into my arms.

“Are you okay? Baby, look at me.””

She buried her face against my chest.

“Daddy, I’m sorry.””

Those words broke something inside me.

“Sorry for what?””

She didn’t answer.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“James, you need to calm down.””

I stared at her.

“Calm down?””

“She was being difficult.””

“My daughter?””

“She refused to listen to me.””

I looked down at Lily’s dress.

The beautiful white flower-girl dress she had picked herself.

The front was torn.

A pair of scissors sat on the makeup table.

My stomach dropped.

“You cut her dress.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She needed to learn.””

“Learn what?””

“That things are changing.””

Her voice became colder.

“After today, she needs to understand that I’m her mother too.””

Lily tightened her arms around my neck.

Then she whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

“What?””

Her lips trembled.

“She does this when you’re not home.””

The room became silent.

I slowly looked back at Vanessa.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“James, don’t listen to her. She’s upset.””

“No.””

I held Lily tighter.

“Tell me exactly what you mean.””

Lily looked terrified.

“She says my real mommy isn’t coming back, so I should stop talking about her.””

My chest tightened.

Vanessa looked away.

That was the answer.

I didn’t need anything else.

Outside the open door, I noticed several bridesmaids standing frozen in the hallway.

They had heard everything.

Marcus arrived seconds later.

“James, what happened?””

I looked at the ballroom entrance.

All those people were waiting.

Family.

Friends.

Everyone who thought they were about to watch the happiest day of my life.

I looked at Vanessa.

The woman I was supposed to marry.

Then I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who trusted me to keep her safe.

“There’s no wedding.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“James, don’t do this.””

I turned away.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered.

I looked down.

Her tiny hand was gripping my jacket.

“There’s something you need to see.””

My heart sank.

“What is it?””

She looked toward the bridal suite.

May you like

“Something I hid because I was scared.””

And then she pointed toward the closet door.
