Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Closet Door
I carried Lily away from the bridal suite while Vanessa followed behind us.
“James, you’re making a mistake,” she said.
I didn’t answer.
Every step I took felt like I was walking away from a life I thought I knew.
Marcus stayed beside me.
He didn’t ask questions.
He just looked at Lily’s face and understood enough.
We entered a small waiting room near the venue office.
I sat Lily down on a chair.
“Sweetheart, tell Daddy what you wanted me to see.””
She looked at Vanessa standing outside the door.
Then she shook her head.
“Not with her here.””
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
Because my daughter was afraid to speak in front of the woman I almost made part of our family.
I closed the door.
“Vanessa, wait outside.””
Her mouth opened.
“James—”
“Now.””
For the first time all day, she listened.
The door closed.
I knelt in front of Lily.
“You’re safe.””
She stared at the floor.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Before the wedding, Vanessa told me I had to practice calling her Mom.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“And when I said I wanted to call her Vanessa?””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“She got mad.””
“When?””
“Yesterday. And the day before.””
I looked at Marcus.
His expression was filled with disbelief.
“What happened yesterday?”” I asked.
Lily reached into her small purse.
The one decorated with tiny silver stars.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I wrote this because I thought you wouldn’t believe me.””
My hands felt cold as I opened it.
The handwriting was messy.
A child’s handwriting.
But every word felt like a knife.
Vanessa said I’m bad.
Vanessa said Daddy loves her more.
Vanessa said if I tell you, you’ll be angry at me.
I looked up.
“Lily…”
She started crying again.
“I didn’t want you to be sad before the wedding.””
That broke me.
A six-year-old child had been protecting my feelings.
When I should have been protecting hers.
I hugged her.
“I’m sorry.””
“Daddy, I tried to be good.””
“You don’t have to earn being loved.””
The door suddenly opened.
Vanessa walked in.
“I think this has gone too far.””
I stood up.
“No. It went too far when you hit my daughter.””
Her face hardened.
“I was trying to discipline her.””
“You slapped a six-year-old.””
“She needs boundaries.””
“She needs safety.””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“See what you caused?””
My blood ran cold.
I stepped between them.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“This is exactly the problem.””
“What problem?””
“You always choose her.””
I stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.””
“And I was supposed to become her mother.””
“No.””
The word came out before I even thought about it.
“You were supposed to be someone who loved her.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re really going to throw away everything because of one mistake?””
“One mistake?””
I pointed toward Lily’s torn dress.
“Your hand.””
“Your words.””
“Your behavior when you thought nobody was watching.””
She became quiet.
That silence told me more than any confession could.
Later, after Vanessa left the room, Marcus helped me gather Lily’s things.
The wedding guests were confused.
People whispered.
Phones came out.
But I didn’t care.
My only focus was my daughter.
As we walked toward the parking lot, Lily suddenly stopped.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked back at the venue.
“I didn’t tell you everything.””
A chill ran through me.
“What else happened?””
She grabbed my hand.
“Vanessa has a box.””
“What kind of box?””
“The kind she hides.””
“Where?””
Lily looked nervous.
“In her room.””
I crouched down.
“Why is that important?””
She swallowed.
“Because she keeps pictures of me inside.””
I frowned.
“What pictures?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The ones where I’m crying.””
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
“Lily, are you sure?””
She nodded.
“She said she keeps them so she remembers how difficult I am.””
My hands curled into fists.
I looked back at the venue.
At the place where I was supposed to say forever.
Then my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice whispered.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“You need to check the security footage from this venue before you leave.””
My heart stopped.
“Who is this?””
The woman hesitated.
Then she said:
“I’m one of Vanessa’s bridesmaids.””
I looked at Lily.
“What footage?””
The woman lowered her voice.
“The footage from last night.””
A pause.

Then:
“Your daughter wasn’t the only person Vanessa hurt.””
