Chapter 3: The Truth Everyone Tried to Hide
I stayed in the parking lot for almost a minute after the call ended.
The world around me continued moving.
Cars arrived.
Guests walked toward the ballroom.
People laughed.
Someone congratulated me from across the driveway.
But I couldn’t hear any of it.
All I could think about was one sentence.
Your daughter wasn’t the only person Vanessa hurt.
Marcus looked at me.
“What did they say?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because saying it out loud would make it real.
“Someone wants me to see security footage.””
His expression changed.
“From today?””
“No.””
I looked toward the venue.
“From last night.””
The venue manager, a man named Robert, found us ten minutes later.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Carter, I heard there was a situation.””
“A situation?””
His eyes moved toward Lily.
Then away.
“I’m sorry.””
I stepped closer.
“Sorry for what?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach twist.
“Mr. Carter, we usually don’t release private footage without authorization.””
“I’m not asking as the groom.””
I looked down at Lily.
“I’m asking as her father.””
Robert sighed.
Then he nodded.
“Come with me.””
We entered the security office behind the ballroom.
Several monitors showed different areas of the venue.
The ceremony space.
The garden.
The hallway.
The bridal suite.
Robert pulled up the recording from the previous evening.
The timestamp appeared.
8:43 PM.
At first, nothing happened.
Then Vanessa appeared.
She was walking down the hallway.
Alone.
She opened the bridal suite door.
A few seconds later, Lily appeared behind her.
My heart tightened.
“She followed her?”” Marcus asked.
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
The video had no sound.
But I could see everything.
Vanessa pointed at something.
Lily shook her head.
Vanessa moved closer.
My hands gripped the edge of the desk.
Then Lily stepped backward.
The same fear was on her face.
The same fear I saw earlier.
The screen suddenly switched.
Another camera angle.
This one showed inside the suite.
And I saw Vanessa grabbing Lily’s arm.
Hard.
I looked away.
I couldn’t watch.
“Turn it off.””
Robert paused.
“Mr. Carter…”
“Turn it off.””
But then Lily spoke.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
She was staring at the screen.
“I want you to know.””
My daughter’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“I didn’t lie.””
I closed my eyes.
“No, baby.””
I held her hand.
“I know.””
After the footage ended, Robert printed copies.
“I’m sorry this happened here.””
I took the papers.
“This isn’t your fault.””
As we walked outside, Vanessa was waiting near the entrance.
She looked different now.
Not scared.
Angry.
“You went through my things?””
I stopped.
“What?””
“My bridesmaid told you.””
I stared at her.
“You know about the footage?””
Her silence answered me.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“I was overwhelmed.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“You don’t understand how hard it is.””
“To what?””
“To raise someone else’s child.””
The words came out casually.
Like they weren’t cruel.
Like she hadn’t just admitted everything.
Lily moved closer to me.
Vanessa noticed.
And her expression softened for half a second.
Then it disappeared.
“I never wanted to hurt her.””
“But you did.””
She looked at me.
“James, think carefully.””
“About what?””
“About what happens next.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You think Lily is the only person who can tell stories?””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She smiled faintly.
A smile I had never seen before.
“I kept records too.””
My stomach dropped.
“What records?””
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out her phone.
And unlocked the screen.
“You’re going to regret choosing her over me.””
She turned the phone toward me.
The first image appeared.
And my blood ran cold.
Because it was a picture of Lily.
But not from today.
It was from months ago.
And someone had written a caption underneath it.
May you like
A caption that changed everything.
