Chapter 10: The Agreement She Wanted

I read Vanessa’s message five times.

The words never changed.

*“Sign this, and Lily stays with me.””*

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.

Because I finally understood what she had been trying to do.

She didn’t want to be Lily’s mother.

She wanted control.

I forwarded the message to Rachel immediately.

Three minutes later, my phone rang.

“James, do not respond.””

“I wasn’t going to.””

“Good.””

I looked at the document attached.

“Can she actually do this?””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice was firm.

“But the fact that she created this document tells us something important.””

“What?””

“She believes she has power over you.””

I looked toward Lily’s bedroom.

The door was slightly open.

She was asleep.

Safe.

At least for tonight.

“She has been planning this for months.””

“Yes.””

Rachel paused.

“And James, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The document isn’t just about guardianship.””

I opened the attachment again.

I scrolled through the pages.

At first, it looked like a normal legal agreement.

Then I saw a section near the bottom.

My stomach turned.

“She included financial authority.””

Rachel was silent.

“Yes.””

“She wants access to Lily’s trust.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The wedding.

The pressure.

The fake concern.

The recordings.

She wanted to become Lily’s legal guardian before anyone realized what she was doing.

The next morning, I took Lily to school myself.

I didn’t want her out of my sight.

As we walked toward the entrance, she held my hand tightly.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Are we safe?””

The question broke my heart.

A child should ask about cartoons.

Friends.

Birthday parties.

Not safety.

“We’re safe.””

“Promise?””

I looked at her.

“I promise.””

After she went inside, I called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“James.””

“I need you to do something.””

“Anything.””

“I need every message Vanessa ever sent you.””

There was a pause.

“Okay.””

“And Marcus?””

“Yeah?””

“Don’t hide anything this time.””

His voice became quiet.

“I won’t.””

Two hours later, Marcus sent me a folder.

I opened it.

Hundreds of messages.

Most were normal.

Then I found the ones from Vanessa.

One stood out.

*Vanessa: “James is too emotional about Lily. Someone needs to help him see reality.””*

Another:

*Vanessa: “If he understood what his daughter costs him, he would make different choices.””*

I stared at the screen.

My daughter was never the problem.

Vanessa just needed me to believe she was.

Then I found a message that made me stop breathing.

*Vanessa: “Once we’re married, things will change. He won’t let a child destroy our future.””*

I threw the phone onto the table.

Marcus looked at me.

“She said that?””

I nodded.

He looked sick.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was thinking about all the times I came home late.

All the times Lily asked if I was upset with her.

All the times she apologized for things she didn’t do.

That afternoon, I met Rachel again.

She placed a folder in front of me.

“We found more.””

“What?””

“Vanessa contacted a private investigator.””

My eyes narrowed.

“For what?””

Rachel slid the papers toward me.

The first page had my name.

The second had Lily’s.

“She was collecting information about your parenting.””

I read the notes.

James works long hours.

Lily is emotionally attached.

Father may be influenced.

I looked up.

“She was trying to make me look unfit.””

“Yes.””

“For custody?””

Rachel nodded.

“And she was building a story.””

I felt anger rising.

“What story?””

Rachel looked at me.

“That Lily was unstable, you were overwhelmed, and Vanessa was the person who could provide a better home.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“She created the problem.””

“And then planned to become the solution.””

That sentence stayed with me.

When I returned home, Lily was sitting on the couch.

She looked nervous.

“Daddy?””

I sat beside her.

“Yes?””

“Can I ask something?””

“Anything.””

“Are you going to leave me?””

My heart shattered.

“No.””

She looked down.

“Vanessa said people leave when children are too much.””

I pulled her close.

“I’m not leaving you.””

“But Mommy left.””

I froze.

Because that was the wound Vanessa had been using.

Emily didn’t leave by choice.

She died.

And Lily carried that pain.

I held her tighter.

“Your mommy didn’t leave you.””

A tear rolled down Lily’s cheek.

“I know.””

She whispered.

“But sometimes it feels like everyone leaves.””

I stayed with her until she fell asleep.

That night, I received another message.

From an unknown number.

No words.

Only a video.

I opened it.

The first frame appeared.

Vanessa.

Talking to someone.

Then I heard the other person’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

May you like

My heart stopped.

Because the person sitting across from Vanessa was someone I never expected.
