Chapter 14: The Truth Behind the Signature

I stared at the paper.

My name was there.

My signature.

But I had never signed that document.

“That is not mine.””

Vanessa’s attorney looked at the judge.

“Your Honor, we have reason to believe Mr. Carter has not been truthful.””

My chest tightened.

Rachel took the document.

She examined it carefully.

“This needs verification.””

The judge nodded.

“It will be reviewed.””

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time all day, she smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A victorious one.

She thought she had changed the story.

After the hearing, Rachel pulled me aside.

“This is what she was saving.””

“What?””

“The document.””

“But it’s fake.””

“I believe you.””

“Then why does she have my signature?””

Rachel looked serious.

“We need to find out.””

We returned to my house.

The first thing I did was search through old paperwork.

Bills.

Contracts.

Insurance forms.

Anything with my signature.

After an hour, Rachel found something.

A copy of a lease agreement.

She placed it beside Vanessa’s document.

“Look.””

I looked.

The signatures were similar.

Too similar.

Someone had copied it.

“She forged it.””

Rachel nodded.

“But we need proof.””

My phone rang.

It was Marcus.

“James.””

His voice sounded urgent.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“I checked my old emails.””

“And?””

“There was a file Vanessa sent me.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Five months ago.””

“What was inside?””

He hesitated.

“Templates.””

“What kind of templates?””

“Legal documents.””

I closed my eyes.

“She was practicing.””

“Yes.””

“Send them.””

A few minutes later, Marcus sent the files.

Rachel opened them.

The first document.

A guardianship agreement.

The second.

A financial authorization form.

The third.

A letter explaining why James Carter was “unable to provide proper care.””

My stomach turned.

“She wrote my downfall before I even knew there was a problem.””

Rachel looked at me.

“She was preparing a case.””

That evening, I sat with Lily.

She was drawing again.

A picture of the three of us.

Me.

Her.

And Emily.

I watched her color.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Are you still getting married?””

The question surprised me.

“No.””

“Because of me?””

I put down the papers.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“Never say that again.””

She nodded.

“But Vanessa said…”

“I know what she said.””

I took a breath.

“She was wrong.””

Lily looked at her drawing.

“Would Mommy have liked Vanessa?””

The question hurt.

Because Emily was gone.

And I couldn’t ask her.

“I think your mom would have wanted you to be loved.””

Lily smiled softly.

“I think so too.””

That night, I received a call.

Not from Rachel.

Not from Marcus.

From Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was quiet.

Different.

“You found out.””

“About what?””

“Everything.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“I know you hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

“Then what?””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“I don’t trust you.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why did you?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Of losing everything.””

My anger softened for one second.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I finally heard the truth.

Fear.

Not love.

Not concern.

Fear.

“Vanessa, you tried to take my daughter.””

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

Then she said:

“But you don’t know the whole story.””

“What story?””

She took a shaky breath.

“About Lily’s mother.””

I went silent.

“Everyone lied to you about Emily.””

My heart started pounding.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your wife didn’t leave Lily the way you think.””

The line went dead.

I stared at my phone.

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

An old picture of Emily.

And a note written in handwriting I recognized.

My wife’s handwriting.

May you like

The message underneath said:

*“Ask James why Emily wanted to tell him the truth.””*
