Chapter 13: The Fight for Lily

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily standing in that bridal suite.

The fear on her face.

The way she whispered that Vanessa did this when I wasn’t home.

A child should never have to wonder if the person caring for them will hurt them.

At 6:00 a.m., Rachel arrived at my house.

She carried two folders.

“We need to file immediately.””

I nodded.

“What happens if Vanessa files first?””

Rachel placed the folders on the table.

“She can request temporary guardianship while making accusations against you.””

“Even after everything we found?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the evidence.

The videos.

The messages.

The documents.

All the proof.

And somehow, I still felt like I was losing.

Because Vanessa had spent months preparing.

I had spent months trusting her.

That difference mattered.

Lily walked into the kitchen holding her stuffed rabbit.

She looked at the papers.

“Are those about me?””

I immediately covered them.

“No, sweetheart.””

She looked at me.

“Is Vanessa trying to take me?””

My heart stopped.

Children hear everything.

Even when adults whisper.

I knelt beside her.

“No one is taking you.””

“But she said…”

I froze.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked down.

“She said if Daddy gets angry, I might have to go live somewhere else.””

I felt anger rise.

Not the kind that made me want revenge.

The kind that made me want to protect.

I held her hands.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You are not a prize people fight over.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You’re my daughter.””

I hugged her.

“And I will always come for you.””

After Lily went back upstairs, Rachel looked at me.

“That’s what we need to remember.””

“What?””

“This isn’t about winning against Vanessa.””

I looked at the documents.

“It’s about protecting Lily.””

At 9:15 a.m., we arrived at family court.

Vanessa was already there.

She looked completely different from the woman I saw in the bridal suite.

Her hair was perfect.

Her clothes were professional.

Her expression was calm.

She looked like someone everyone would believe.

That was the most frightening part.

She walked toward me.

“James.””

I didn’t answer.

She looked at Rachel.

“You hired an attorney.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“I expected that.””

I stared at her.

“You planned this.””

She lowered her voice.

“I planned for reality.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You planned to make people believe your version of it.””

Her smile disappeared.

Before she could respond, the courtroom doors opened.

We went inside.

The judge reviewed the documents.

Vanessa’s attorney spoke first.

“Your Honor, my client has been deeply involved in Lily Carter’s life. She has attempted to provide stability while Mr. Carter’s emotional attachment has prevented him from recognizing serious concerns.””

I felt my hands tighten.

Emotional attachment.

That was the phrase.

The same story Vanessa had been telling everyone.

Rachel stood.

“Your Honor, Mr. Carter’s attachment to his daughter is called being a parent.””

The judge looked at the evidence.

Videos.

Messages.

Documents.

Then Vanessa’s attorney presented their evidence.

Photos.

Reports.

Notes.

My heart sank.

Because some of them were real.

Pictures of Lily crying.

Moments where she looked upset.

Moments Vanessa had captured and twisted.

The judge looked serious.

“This court needs context.””

Rachel nodded.

“We have it.””

She presented the videos.

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

The first real fear.

The video played.

Vanessa telling Lily to stop talking about her mother.

Vanessa calling her difficult.

Vanessa grabbing her arm.

Then the wedding footage.

The courtroom watched the moment I opened the door.

The slap.

The torn dress.

The silence afterward was overwhelming.

Vanessa looked down.

Her attorney whispered something to her.

Then Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Your Honor, there is more.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

“I didn’t want to show this.””

My stomach dropped.

Rachel immediately stood.

“Your Honor—”

But Vanessa’s attorney handed over a folder.

The judge opened it.

I watched his expression change.

Then he looked at me.

“Mr. Carter.””

My heart started pounding.

“What is it?””

The judge held up a document.

“Do you recognize this?””

I looked at it.

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because it was my signature.

On a document I had never seen before.
