Chapter 12: The Last Person I Trusted
I pulled over on the side of the road.
The world around me blurred.
Cars passed.
People walked.
Everything continued.
But my entire focus was on one thing.
Rachel’s silence.
“Why didn’t you answer my question?””
She took a breath.
“James, I can explain.””
Everyone said that.
Vanessa.
My father.
Marcus.
Every person who hid something from me.
They all had an explanation.
“Explain.””
Rachel was quiet.
“I knew Vanessa before you hired me.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?””
“She contacted me first.””
My chest felt heavy.
“When?””
“Before the wedding.””
“How long before?””
“A few weeks.””
I closed my eyes.
“You knew she was investigating Lily.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to find out why.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were trying to find out why while representing me?””
“I needed evidence.””
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You needed time.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I looked at the empty road.
“My daughter was being hurt.””
Rachel went quiet.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“If you knew, you would have told me.””
She didn’t respond.
And that silence confirmed it.
“You let me believe you were on my side.””
“I was.””
“Then why did Vanessa have your name?””
“Because she asked me for help.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She wanted legal advice.””
“About what?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Guardianship.””
The same word.
The same plan.
I felt sick.
“What did you tell her?””
“That I couldn’t help her.””
“Did you tell her about Lily’s trust?””
“No.””
“Did you give her information?””
“No.””
I wanted to believe her.
But I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
“James, listen to me.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I looked at my phone.
The person who was supposed to protect my daughter’s future had kept secrets too.
“I need to know one thing.””
“What?””
“Are you helping Vanessa now?””
“No.””
Her answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
But maybe because she was telling the truth.
“I’m not.””
I sat there for a long moment.
Then I asked:
“Why did she know your name?””
Rachel sighed.
“Because I rejected her.””
“When?””
“Three weeks before your wedding.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
The same words Marcus used.
The same mistake.
Everyone thought they could handle Vanessa.
And everyone underestimated her.
That evening, I met Rachel in person.
She brought documents.
Emails.
Messages.
Proof.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I made a mistake.””
I looked through the files.
Vanessa had contacted several people.
My father.
Marcus.
The school.
Even Rachel.
She had been building connections everywhere.
Trying to create a version of reality where she was the victim.
Then I found something.
A message from Vanessa.
Sent to Rachel.
*“If James refuses, I’ll make sure everyone sees what kind of father he really is.””*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“She threatened to release something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
My phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
Another video.
I opened it.
This time, the video showed me.
My heart stopped.
It was security footage from my own house.
The angle was from inside Lily’s room.
I watched myself walking into the room after work.
Holding groceries.
Smiling.
Then the video changed.
Another day.
Another moment.
A moment where Lily was crying.
And Vanessa was standing nearby.
The caption appeared:
*“Evidence of James Carter failing to notice his daughter’s emotional instability.””*
I stared at the screen.
“She recorded my house.””
Rachel looked horrified.
“She had cameras?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew.
Vanessa hadn’t just been watching Lily.
She had been collecting moments.
Twisting them.
Preparing them.
Then another message arrived.
This time, no video.
Just words.
*“Tomorrow morning, I’m filing for emergency guardianship.””*
My blood ran cold.
Rachel grabbed her phone.
“James.””
“What?””
“We need to move now.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because if she files first…”
She stopped.
“What?””
May you like
Her face turned pale.
“She controls the story before we get a chance to tell the truth.””
