Chapter 9: The Battle For My Father’s Legacy
I read the sentence over and over.
My uncle’s handwriting.
His words.
His intention.
A part of me still wanted to believe there was another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
Anything.
But the evidence kept building.
And every piece pointed back to the same person.
Michael.
My father’s brother.
My mentor.
The man who promised he would protect me.
I returned to Robert’s office with the photograph.
He studied it carefully.
“This changes everything.””
“Can we prove it?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“The handwriting.””
I nodded.
“Then do it.””
Robert looked at me.
“Sarah, before we move forward, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“If Michael intentionally altered the trust, this could become a legal battle.””
I looked at the window.
Outside, people walked past without knowing my entire family history had become a war.
“I’m not fighting for the money.””
Robert looked surprised.
“Then what are you fighting for?””
I answered immediately.
“The truth.””
Later that evening, Daniel came to my house.
Our house.
The place where we had built memories.
The place where I now felt like a stranger.
He stood at the door holding a folder.
“I found something.””
I let him in.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
“I went through my old emails.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were messages between Daniel and Michael.
My heart sank.
“How long?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Almost four years.””
I stared at him.
“You were talking to Michael for four years?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
I closed the folder.
“What did he want?””
Daniel sat down.
“He said he wanted to protect Olivia.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“I know.””
“And everyone keeps hurting me while doing it.””
He looked down.
“I was wrong.””
I wanted to be angry.
But I was tired.
“What did Michael tell you?””
Daniel took a breath.
“He said your father left Olivia nothing.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said Olivia was forgotten.””
My hands tightened.
“And you believed him?””
“I thought I was helping my daughter.””
“You helped someone manipulate you.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“Do you know what hurts most?””
He didn’t answer.
“I could have accepted Olivia hating me.””
His eyes lifted.
“But I can’t accept that you stood beside me while people planned against me.””
Daniel looked broken.
“I love you.””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know if love is enough anymore.””
Silence filled the room.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He turned the phone toward me.
The name appeared.
Michael.
My uncle.
The man who had been hiding the truth.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through the speaker.
I couldn’t hear everything.
Only pieces.
“You made a mistake.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“What are you talking about?””
Then Michael said something that made both of us freeze.
“Sarah knows.””
Daniel looked at me.
Michael continued.
“And if she knows about Olivia, then she probably knows about the other secret too.””
My heart stopped.
Other secret?
Daniel whispered:
“What other secret?””
There was a long pause.
Then Michael answered:
“The one your father died trying to hide.””
The call ended.
I stared at Daniel.
Neither of us moved.
Because suddenly, the question was no longer why my father hid Olivia.

The question was:
What else had my father taken to his grave?
