Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The next morning, I sat in Robert’s office with a cup of coffee that had gone cold.
I hadn’t slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the sound of Olivia’s hand hitting my face.
But worse than that, I heard her words.
You’re not my family.
After twelve years, she had finally said out loud what she had always believed.
Robert placed a folder on the desk.
“Sarah, I want you to look at this carefully.””
I opened it.
The first page was the condo agreement.
My name.
My company.
My signature.
Then I turned the page.
Daniel’s signature appeared below an amendment.
And next to it was Olivia’s.
I looked at Robert.
“When was this added?””
“Six months ago.””
My hands tightened around the paper.
Six months ago.
The exact time Olivia started planning her wedding.
The exact time she suddenly became sweeter to Daniel.
The exact time she started asking me about “family investments.””
Robert leaned back.
“Did Daniel ever ask you to sign anything?””
“No.””
“Did you authorize him to transfer ownership?””
“No.””
He nodded slowly.
“Then we need to investigate.””
I stared at the documents.
“Robert, tell me something.””
“Yes?””
“Did Daniel love me?””
The question surprised even me.
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“I’m your attorney, Sarah.””
“I know.””
He chose his words carefully.
“But sometimes people can love someone and still make selfish choices.””
I looked down.
That was the hardest truth.
Because Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
He was the man who held my hand through my mother’s funeral.
The man who stayed awake with me during surgeries.
The man who promised we would grow old together.
And somehow, he had still chosen to hide things from me.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
*Please come home. We need to talk.*
I stared at it.
Robert noticed.
“Are you going?””
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“I need to hear him explain it.””
When I arrived home, I expected an argument.
Instead, I found Daniel sitting at the kitchen table.
No anger.
No excuses.
Just exhaustion.
“I know you’re hurt,” he said.
I placed my purse down.
“Hurt is a small word.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
I stayed standing.
“Why did you do it?””
Daniel looked at his hands.
“When Olivia came back into my life, she told me she felt like she had lost everything.””
“She had a beautiful home.””
“She wanted security.””
“She wanted control.””
He looked up.
“Sarah.””
I stopped.
“Don’t defend her.””
“I’m not.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Vanessa convinced me that Olivia needed protection.””
I laughed quietly.
“Vanessa.””
The name explained more than he realized.
“She told me you were becoming too attached to controlling everything,” he continued.
I stared at him.
“Controlling?””
“Yes.””
I looked around the house.
The house I paid for.
The furniture I selected.
The life I built.
“I controlled everything?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“No.””
“Then why did you listen?””
He had no answer.
The silence stretched.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I was afraid Olivia would leave again.””
That sentence hurt.
Not because he loved his daughter.
Because he sacrificed me to prove it.
I walked toward the door.
“Where are you going?””
“To think.””
“Sarah, please.””
I turned around.
“I need space from the man who signed away my trust while standing beside me every day.””
Before I could leave, there was a knock.
Daniel looked confused.
“I’m not expecting anyone.””
The door opened before either of us reached it.
Vanessa stood there.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
In her hand was a small envelope.
“Sarah,” she said.
My entire body went cold.
“How did you get in?””
She ignored the question.
“I think it’s time you knew the truth.””
Daniel stood.
“Vanessa, leave.””
She smiled.
“You still don’t understand, Daniel.””
She handed me the envelope.
“This isn’t about Olivia.””
I looked at the paper inside.
The first line made my heart stop.
It was dated three years earlier.
Before the wedding.
Before the condo.
Before the betrayal.
And underneath the date was a name I never expected to see.
Mine.
May you like
Vanessa leaned closer and whispered:
“Sarah, your husband has been lying to you for much longer than you think.””
