Chapter 11: The Husband Olivia Never Knew

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, another piece moved into place.

Olivia.

Vanessa.

Michael.

Ethan.

The wedding.

The documents.

The slap.

None of it felt random anymore.

The next morning, I asked Robert to arrange a meeting.

Not with Michael.

Not with Vanessa.

With Ethan.

He arrived at noon.

Alone.

The confident man who had smiled beside Olivia at the wedding looked completely different now.

He looked nervous.

I placed the photograph on the table.

His face changed instantly.

That reaction told me everything.

“You know this picture.””

Ethan looked away.

“Sarah…”

“Don’t lie.””

He swallowed.

“I never wanted this.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me what this is.””

He sat down.

“My father knew Michael.””

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ethan rubbed his hands together.

“Business.””

Robert looked at him.

“What kind of business?””

Ethan hesitated.

“The kind that wasn’t always legal.””

The room went quiet.

I stared at him.

“You’re saying Michael worked with your father?””

“Yes.””

“And you married Olivia because of him?””

His silence answered.

I felt anger rise.

“Why?””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“Because Michael promised me something.””

“What?””

“A future.””

I almost laughed.

“A future built on my family?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Everyone says that.””

“I’m serious.””

He looked at me.

“When I met Olivia, I thought she was just a rich woman with family problems.””

“And then?””

“Then Michael told me who she was.””

“Who?””

“The daughter of the man who controlled the trust.””

I froze.

“So you knew about the trust.””

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

Ethan nodded.

“I knew Olivia would inherit something.””

I looked at him.

“Did you love her?””

That question made him uncomfortable.

And somehow, that was the answer.

He looked away.

“I cared about her.””

Not loved.

Cared.

A word people used when the truth was too ugly to say.

I stood.

“Does Olivia know?””

“No.””

“Does Vanessa know?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Robert.

He understood.

“The wedding was arranged around access.””

Ethan nodded.

“Michael said Olivia needed someone who could help her control the assets.””

My stomach turned.

Control.

That word again.

Everyone wanted control.

Nobody wanted honesty.

I picked up the photograph.

“Why send me this?””

Ethan looked confused.

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

Before he could answer, the door opened.

Olivia walked in.

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“What’s going on?””

Nobody spoke.

Her eyes moved to the photograph.

Then to Ethan.

“What is that?””

He stood.

“Olivia…”

Her face changed.

“Why do you look scared?””

She looked at me.

“Sarah?””

I didn’t answer.

Because for the first time, I saw something different in her expression.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

“Tell me,” she whispered.

Ethan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Olivia stepped back.

“You knew something.””

“Olivia—”

“You knew.””

Her voice cracked.

“You knew about my family?””

He looked down.

“I knew about the trust.””

The color disappeared from her face.

“What trust?””

Silence.

I watched the realization hit her.

She had thought she was the only victim.

She had thought everyone had used her to get what they wanted.

And maybe they had.

Ethan reached for her.

“I was going to tell you.””

She moved away.

“Everyone was going to tell me later.””

The sentence sounded familiar.

Because I had said it.

Years earlier.

She looked at me.

And for the first time, there was no hatred in her eyes.

Only regret.

“I didn’t know.””

I believed she meant it.

But then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

She handed me the phone.

A voicemail notification.

From Michael.

Recorded ten minutes earlier.

I pressed play.

His voice filled the room.

“Olivia, if Sarah finds out about the final document, everything is over.””

I looked at Olivia.

The recording continued.

“And remember what I told you. You are the only one who can stop her.””

The voicemail ended.

Nobody moved.

Because Michael wasn’t just hiding secrets.

May you like

He was still making plans.

And now his plan involved Olivia stopping me.
