Chapter 10: The Secret My Father Buried
The words stayed in the room long after the call ended.
*The one your father died trying to hide.*
I stood there, staring at Daniel’s phone screen.
Michael’s name had disappeared.
But the damage remained.
For years, I thought my father’s greatest secret was Olivia.
I was wrong.
There had been something else.
Something so serious that my uncle believed it could destroy everything.
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
“Sarah…”
I held up my hand.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
Not because he was afraid of me.
Because he knew I was done accepting half-truths.
I walked to the cabinet where I kept my father’s old belongings.
A watch.
A few handwritten notes.
A leather folder I had never opened.
I had kept these things because they were memories.
Now I wondered if they were evidence.
Daniel watched me.
“What are you looking for?””
“The truth.””
Inside the leather folder were old business records.
My father’s company documents.
Tax papers.
Letters.
Nothing unusual.
Until I found a sealed envelope.
My name was written on it.
But beneath my name were three words.
*Open after discovery.*
My hands froze.
“Discovery of what?”” Daniel whispered.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
Again.
*Sarah, if you have found this, then someone has finally forced the truth into the open.*
I sat down.
Daniel remained standing.
I read.
*There are things I should have told you while I was alive. I was afraid that the truth would hurt you. I was wrong. Secrets hurt more.*
My eyes moved faster.
*Michael believes protecting the family means controlling the outcome. He does not understand that control destroys trust.*
I looked at Daniel.
My father had known.
He knew Michael was dangerous.
*If Michael ever tells you he acted in my best interest, remember this: he was protecting himself.*
My heart raced.
Then came the sentence that made me stop.
*The company was never the only thing at risk.*
I turned the page.
There was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Michael.
Robert arrived twenty minutes later.
I handed him the letter.
He read silently.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He looked up.
“Sarah, this is bigger than the trust.””
“How?””
Robert pointed to the records.
“These are financial transfers.””
“Yes.””
“They show money being moved out of your father’s company.””
“By Michael?””
Robert nodded.
“Over several years.””
I felt sick.
“My uncle stole from my father?””
“We need a full investigation before making conclusions.””
I appreciated that Robert was careful.
But I knew what I saw.
Michael hadn’t just hidden Olivia.
He had been building a life on stolen pieces of mine.
Daniel sat quietly.
Then he spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Michael contacted me before the wedding.””
My expression hardened.
“What did he say?””
“He told me Olivia deserved control over the condo because it was connected to her birthright.””
“And?””
“I believed him.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course he did.
Everyone had believed someone else’s version of the truth.
Nobody had asked mine.
Daniel continued.
“He also told me not to tell you because you would react emotionally.””
I laughed.
“Emotionally?””
He looked ashamed.
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
I stood.
“You don’t.””
He looked at me.
“You let a man who manipulated my family convince you that I was the problem.””
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
The silence was painful.
But necessary.
My phone buzzed.
Robert looked at the screen.
“What is it?””
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo appeared.
My father.
Michael.
Vanessa.
And a fourth person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who made my blood run cold.
Daniel saw my face.
“Who is that?””
I zoomed in.
The person standing beside my father wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone who had been at my wedding.
Someone who had watched Olivia humiliate me.
Someone who had known exactly what was happening.
I whispered:
“Ethan.””
Daniel frowned.
“Olivia’s husband?””
I nodded.
The message underneath the photo contained only one sentence.
*Ask your new son-in-law why he married your daughter.*
I stared at the words.
Because suddenly, the wedding wasn’t just a family betrayal.
May you like
It was a plan.
And Ethan had been part of it from the beginning.
