Chapter 6: The Photograph From The Past

I couldn’t breathe.

The photograph shook between Vanessa’s fingers.

My father.

Not a picture from a family event.

Not an old business photo.

A personal photo.

He was younger.

Smiling.

Standing beside Vanessa.

Her hand rested on his shoulder.

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at the photograph.

“What is this?””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“Something you should have known years ago.””

My voice became quiet.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked at the picture.

“From him.””

The room seemed to disappear.

My father had always been the one person I trusted completely.

After my mother died, he raised me alone.

He taught me how to run a business.

How to read contracts.

How to never let anyone make decisions for me.

And yet somehow, there was a part of his life I never knew.

“You knew my father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Long before you met Daniel.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You never told me this.””

She ignored him.

“Your father and I worked together.””

“Worked together?””

She smiled.

“Among other things.””

A horrible feeling formed in my stomach.

I looked at Olivia.

She looked just as confused.

“What are you saying?”” I asked.

Vanessa placed the photograph on the table.

“I’m saying your father knew Olivia before you did.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

My hands became cold.

“Olivia was six years old when I met her.””

“Yes.””

“And my father was already gone.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at Olivia.

“She was his daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

The sentence didn’t make sense.

It couldn’t.

My mind rejected it immediately.

“No.””

Vanessa watched my reaction.

“You always believed your father was the perfect man.””

“He was.””

She tilted her head.

“You only knew the version he showed you.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“No.””

Daniel looked between us.

“Vanessa, are you saying Olivia is Sarah’s half-sister?””

Olivia stepped back.

“What?””

The room exploded with silence.

Nobody had expected that.

Not even Olivia.

I stared at her.

The woman who had slapped me.

The woman I spent years trying to love.

The woman who believed she had no place in my family.

My half-sister.

It was impossible.

But the documents.

The trust.

The photograph.

Everything connected.

Robert called again.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me you found something.””

His voice was tense.

“I did.””

“What?””

“I traced the trust documents.””

“And?””

“The beneficiary wasn’t originally Olivia.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who?””

A pause.

“An unnamed child.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Robert continued.

“Your father created the trust for a child whose identity would be revealed only after his death.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

“I don’t know yet.””

The phone went silent.

Then Robert added:

“But Sarah, there’s something strange.””

“What?””

“The trust was changed eleven years ago.””

The same year my father died.

“Who changed it?””

Robert hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father’s lawyer.””

I frowned.

“My father’s lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“Who was it?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was already staring at me.

Like she knew the answer.

Robert said the name.

And my blood went cold.

Because it was a name I recognized.

A name connected to my own family.

A name that meant this secret had been hidden much closer than I ever imagined.

“Sarah,” Robert said quietly.

“Are you still there?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the person who changed the trust was not a stranger.

May you like

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.

And they had been protecting the truth about Olivia since the day my father died.
