Chapter 1: The Slap That Changed Everything
“Stop tomorrow’s property transfer,” I said into the phone while the entire wedding reception watched me bleed from a slap that was never supposed to happen.
For years, I had tried to prove I belonged in a family that had never fully opened its doors to me.
I bought the flowers.
I paid the hotel.
I signed every invoice for the designer dress, the five-course dinner, the orchestra, the honeymoon suite in Miami, and the luxury car waiting outside for the newlyweds.
The total was just under $180,000.
Not because I wanted praise.
Because I loved Daniel.
And because I loved the little girl who once held my hand and called me “Mom” when she was six years old.
But Olivia was no longer that little girl.
She was twenty-seven now, wearing a custom wedding gown I had paid for, standing beneath a ceiling covered in white roses I had chosen, looking at me like I was a stranger who had wandered into her celebration.
I should have known something was wrong when I entered the ballroom.
The room was perfect.
Every candle was glowing.
Every table had fresh flowers.
Every guest looked amazed.
But my name card—the one that should have been beside Daniel’s—was missing.
I found it near the back wall.
Placed beside the vendor tables.
For a moment, I thought it was a mistake.
Then I looked toward the family table.
Olivia’s mother, Vanessa, was sitting in my seat.
She smiled when our eyes met.
Not a warm smile.
A victorious one.
I walked over quietly and picked up my name card.
“Sarah?””
I turned.
Olivia stood behind me, holding a glass of champagne.
Her wedding guests surrounded her like an audience waiting for entertainment.
“What are you doing?”” she asked.
I looked at the card in my hand.
“I’m moving my seat back.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“Back where?””
“Beside your father.””
The room became strangely quiet.
Olivia gave a small laugh.
“You’re serious?””
I frowned.
“Of course I am.””
She looked around at the guests.
“Everyone, apparently we have a problem.””
Daniel, who was speaking with his brother nearby, immediately noticed the tension.
“Olivia,” he said.
“What’s going on?””
She pointed at the card.
“She thinks she belongs at the family table.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“She is family.””
Olivia shook her head.
“No, Dad. She married you. That doesn’t make her my mother.””
I felt the words hit harder than I expected.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Enough.””
But Olivia wasn’t finished.
She looked toward the back of the room.
“Honestly, she can sit with the vendors. They’re the ones she paid to impress anyway.””
A few people laughed nervously.
My face burned.
I lowered my voice.
“Olivia, please don’t do this here.””
She tilted her head.
“Why? Because people might finally see what this really is?””
“What what is?””
Her smile turned cold.
“You trying to buy your way into our family.””
I stared at her.
“I paid for this wedding because I love you.””
“No,” she said.
“You paid because you wanted to feel important.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Olivia, apologize.””
She ignored him.
“You always do this, Sarah. You always act like money gives you a place.””
I swallowed.
“I never asked for a title. I asked for respect.””
She moved closer.
“Respect?””
Then it happened.
Her hand moved so quickly I barely saw it.
The sound of the slap echoed through the ballroom.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I touched my cheek.
I could feel every eye on me.
Daniel grabbed Olivia’s wrist.
“What the hell is wrong with you?””
Olivia pulled away.
Vanessa rushed forward instead of comforting me.
“She pushed her too far.””
I looked at Daniel.
I didn’t need him to choose sides.
I just needed him to show me that the years I spent loving his daughter mattered.
He did.
“Both of you apologize to my wife,” he said firmly.
“Right now.””
Olivia laughed.
“She won’t do anything.””
Her eyes locked onto mine.
“She’s too desperate to keep you.””
Something inside me went completely still.
The anger disappeared.
The sadness disappeared.
All I felt was clarity.
I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.
Olivia rolled her eyes.
“What are you doing? Calling security?””
“No.””
I dialed a number I had never expected to use on my own family.
When Robert answered, I looked directly at Olivia.
“Robert, stop tomorrow’s property transfer.””
Her smile faded.
I continued.
“Cancel the honeymoon payment. Freeze the household allowance. And keep the Mercedes titled under my company.””
The room changed.
Olivia’s new husband, Ethan, looked confused.
“Wait,” he said.
“What?””
I turned away from him.
The things they thought they owned were never theirs.
The Miami condo.
The Mercedes.
The accounts paying for their lifestyle.
Every single thing had my name attached to it.
Then Robert became quiet on the phone.
Too quiet.
“Sarah,” he said carefully, “before I do that, there’s something you need to know.””
I gripped the phone.
“What?””
May you like
His next words made my stomach drop.
“Daniel’s signature on the condo documents… there’s a problem.””
