Chapter 4: The Secret Inside the Envelope
I stared at the paper in my hand until the words blurred.
My name was printed at the top.
Not a nickname.
Not a mistake.
My full legal name.
*Sarah Mitchell.*
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The kitchen felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Daniel looked at the envelope like it was something dangerous.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly.
“What did you bring here?””
She crossed her arms.
“The truth.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is this true?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
I unfolded the document.
It was a copy of a financial agreement.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
A date.
Three years before Olivia’s wedding.
Three years before the slap.
Three years before I discovered my husband had been making decisions behind my back.
The agreement involved my company.
My money.
And Daniel.
I looked up.
“You signed this?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Sarah, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“No more explanations before answers.””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
She had been waiting for this moment.
“Ask him why he never told you.””
I turned the page.
There was a section highlighted.
A transfer agreement.
A promise.
A commitment.
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel.””
He looked down.
“I was going to tell you.””
I laughed softly.
That sentence again.
The same excuse.
The same promise.
The same betrayal.
“When?””
He looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s the problem.””
I placed the paper on the table.
“You always planned to tell me later.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is saying the wrong thing during an argument.””
I pointed at the document.
“This was a decision.””
Vanessa walked toward the table.
“You should know what happened.””
Daniel immediately said, “Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why shouldn’t she?””
His face changed.
Because he knew.
I was done protecting him.
Vanessa pulled out a chair and sat down.
“Three years ago, Olivia was struggling.””
I almost smiled.
“Struggling?””
“She was angry that everything would eventually go to you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked away.
Vanessa continued.
“She believed you replaced her mother.””
“I never did that.””
“I know,” Vanessa said.
Her calmness made it worse.
“But Olivia believed it.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you listened to this?””
He swallowed.
“I was trying to keep peace.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to make everyone happy except me.””
Daniel looked wounded.
But he didn’t deny it.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“She convinced him to create a safety plan.””
“A safety plan?””
“For Olivia.””
I looked at the documents again.
“So he moved my assets?””
“Not all of them.””
“Some of them.””
Silence.
That was enough.
My phone buzzed.
Robert.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me you found something.””
His voice was serious.
“I did.””
I walked away from the table.
“What?””
“I checked the amendment history.””
“And?””
“The document Daniel signed wasn’t the final version.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone replaced pages after his signature.””
I looked back at Daniel.
“What?””
Robert continued.
“Sarah, the version you’re looking at may not even be legally valid.””
A strange feeling passed through me.
Not relief.
Not yet.
Something else.
Confusion.
Because if Daniel had been manipulated…
Who had manipulated him?
I ended the call.
Daniel looked nervous.
“What did he say?””
I stared at him.
“Someone altered the documents.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
“You knew.””
Her eyes moved to mine.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Yes, you do.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked between us.
“Vanessa?””
For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.
Then she stood.
“I came here because Sarah deserved the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“No.””
I picked up the envelope.
“You came here because something went wrong.””
Her jaw tightened.
Before she could answer, the front door opened.
Olivia walked inside.
She looked exhausted.
Her makeup was gone.
Her wedding dress was replaced by jeans and a sweater.
For the first time in years, she looked like the little girl who used to run through my house.
Then she saw her mother.
And the papers.
Her face changed.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“What?””
Olivia’s voice shook.
“I told you not to bring this out.””
I froze.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“What did you just say?””
Olivia looked like she had realized her mistake.
Too late.
Because suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t only Daniel’s secret.
It wasn’t only Vanessa’s plan.
May you like
Olivia was part of it.
And she had just admitted it.
