Chapter 7: The Name Written In The Trust

I held the phone against my ear, but I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

“Robert,” I said slowly.

“Say the name again.””

There was a pause.

Then he answered.

“Your uncle, Michael Mitchell.””

The room became completely silent.

My uncle.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who stood beside me at my father’s funeral.

The man who told me, “Your father would want you to be strong.””

The man who helped me take over the family business.

The man who had always said he protected my father’s legacy.

I looked at the trust papers sitting on the table.

My fingers felt numb.

“Robert, are you sure?””

“I verified the signature three times.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Sarah?””

I ignored him.

“Robert, what exactly did Michael change?””

“Originally, the trust was designed to protect two children.””

I froze.

“Two?””

“Yes.””

My eyes moved toward Olivia.

She looked terrified.

“What children?””

Robert continued.

“Your father named both of you.””

The room tilted.

“Me and Olivia?””

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

I walked toward the window.

The street outside was calm.

People were driving home.

Walking their dogs.

Living normal lives.

And my entire understanding of my own family had collapsed in one night.

“My father knew about her.””

“Yes.””

“He knew Olivia existed?””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Robert’s voice softened.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

I ended the call.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Olivia spoke.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

Her voice was smaller than I had ever heard it.

“I swear, I didn’t know.””

I wanted to believe her.

That was the worst part.

Because despite everything, some piece of me still remembered the little girl who once gave me a handmade birthday card.

The little girl who cried when I left for a business trip.

The little girl who once asked if she could call me Mom.

But that little girl was gone.

And I didn’t know who stood in front of me anymore.

“Then what did you know?”” I asked.

She looked down.

“My mother told me your father left something for me.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Olivia.””

She wiped her eyes.

“She said your family owed me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you believed her?””

Olivia didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel sat down heavily.

“I don’t understand.””

Nobody looked at him.

Because somehow, the man who had spent years trying to keep his family together was the only person who knew the least.

Vanessa stood.

“I think everyone needs time.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to decide when this conversation ends.””

Her expression hardened.

For the first time, I saw the woman behind the calm voice.

Someone who had spent years moving pieces around a board.

“You think you understand everything,” Vanessa said.

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

She stepped closer.

“Your father wasn’t the man you remember.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t get to speak about him.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know him.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“I knew him better than you did.””

The words cut.

Not because I believed her.

Because I feared there might be a piece of truth hidden inside them.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Robert.

*I found the original trust documents. You need to see this immediately.*

Attached was a scanned page.

I opened it.

The first line made my hands shake.

*The purpose of this trust is to protect my daughters.*

Daughters.

Plural.

Below that was my father’s signature.

Then another sentence.

*Sarah must never discover Olivia’s identity until the time is right.*

I stopped breathing.

My father had written my name.

He had known.

He had hidden this from me.

But why?

I scrolled further.

There was one final paragraph.

One condition.

One sentence that changed everything.

*The inheritance will only transfer when both daughters choose each other over revenge.*

I read it again.

And again.

Then I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

Daniel whispered:

“What does it say?””

I locked my phone.

Because suddenly, I understood.

This wasn’t only about money.

My father had created a test.

A test neither Olivia nor I had known existed.

And someone had spent years making sure we would fail.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You changed the documents because you didn’t want us to find this.””

Her face went pale.

For the first time, she had no answer.

And that was when I knew.

We weren’t uncovering an old secret.

We were uncovering a war that had started long before I ever met Daniel.
