Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Chose A Side
Nobody moved.
Olivia stood in the doorway, realizing she had revealed something she never intended to say.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“Olivia.””
She looked away.
“Dad, I can explain.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone in that room had become an expert at explaining.
Nobody had become an expert at telling the truth.
I picked up the documents.
“How long?””
Olivia looked at me.
“What?””
“How long did you know?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
Not guilt.
Anger.
“Why does everyone act like I’m the villain?””
The question shocked me.
I stared at her.
“You slapped me at your wedding.””
Her face tightened.
“You embarrassed me first.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No, she didn’t.””
Olivia looked at him.
“You always choose her.””
That sentence silenced him.
Because that was the wound she had carried for years.
But instead of healing it, she used it as a weapon.
I spoke quietly.
“Olivia, I spent twelve years trying to be someone you could love.””
She looked away.
“I never asked you to.””
The words were cruel.
But somehow, they didn’t hurt like before.
Because now I finally believed them.
She never asked.
I was the one begging for a place that was never offered.
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Olivia, tell the truth.””
She crossed her arms.
“I wanted security.””
“By stealing from Sarah?””
“I didn’t steal anything.””
“You helped create fake documents.””
Her face changed.
“I didn’t know they were fake.””
Vanessa immediately said, “Enough.””
I turned.
There it was.
The panic.
The control.
The fear of losing the story.
I walked closer to Olivia.
“Who told you this would work?””
She stayed silent.
“Olivia.””
Her eyes moved to Vanessa.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Daniel saw it too.
“Vanessa?””
Her mother stood.
“I was protecting my daughter.””
“From what?”” Daniel asked.
“From being left with nothing.””
I looked around the room.
Nothing.
That word.
It was always the same.
Everyone feared having nothing.
But nobody seemed to care that I had been treated like I was nothing.
My phone rang.
Robert again.
I answered.
“Sarah, I found another document.””
My eyes stayed on Vanessa.
“What document?””
“A trust agreement.””
I frowned.
“What about it?””
“It names a beneficiary.””
“Who?””
Robert paused.
Then said:
“Olivia.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa looked satisfied.
But Robert continued.
“There’s one problem.””
I waited.
“The agreement was created before your marriage.””
My heart stopped.
“Before my marriage?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Explain.””
He looked confused.
“I don’t know anything about that.””
Robert continued.
“Sarah, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“The trust wasn’t created by Daniel.””
I felt the room shift.
“Then who created it?””
Silence.
Then Robert answered.
“The original owner.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
“Your father.””
The world stopped.
My father had been dead for eleven years.
He had left me a small inheritance.
A business.
A life.
Everything I built came from that foundation.
But I had never heard of a trust.
“Robert,” I whispered.
“Yes?””
“Why would my father create a trust for Olivia?””
“That’s what I’m trying to understand.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She suddenly looked less confident.
Less powerful.
More afraid.
I ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
Then Olivia whispered:
“My mother said your father left something for me.””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
She looked guilty.
“I thought you knew.””
My chest tightened.
“My father never met you.””
Olivia’s face went pale.
“I know.””
“Then why would he leave you anything?””
She didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Because he knew.””
“Knew what?””
She looked directly at me.
“That you weren’t the person you thought you were.””
The room went cold.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
Then she reached into her purse.
And pulled out an old photograph.
May you like
A photograph of my father.
Standing beside her.
