Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Adoption
Nobody spoke after Vanessa said his name.
Not because we didn’t want answers.
Because we were afraid of them.
“Who is he?””
I asked.
Vanessa stared at the ground.
“His name is Victor Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction from Daniel and Rachel told me everything.
They knew him.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“How?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because he was the reason everything happened.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can’t.””
I looked at her.
“You’ve been saying that for twelve years.””
Her eyes closed.
Then she whispered:
“Victor was Rachel’s employer.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“He owned the company where I worked.””
“And Daniel?””
“He knew him through business.””
I frowned.
“Then why would he want Lily?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Because Victor believed children could be bought.””
The words made my skin crawl.
“What?””
Rachel looked at Lily.
“He had lost his own family years before. After that, he became obsessed with creating the perfect family.””
I felt sick.
“And Lily?””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“She looked like his daughter.””
Silence.
A terrible kind of silence.
I looked at Lily.
My little girl.
The child who laughed at cartoons.
The child who fed a hungry man behind a wall.
A child who had unknowingly been the center of a nightmare.
“Why didn’t anyone tell the police?””
Rachel laughed sadly.
“We tried.””
“And?””
She looked away.
“Victor had money. Influence. Lawyers.””
Daniel added:
“And Vanessa helped him.””
I turned sharply.
“What?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You signed the papers.””
My chest tightened.
“What papers?””
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a folded document.
“I was supposed to become Lily’s guardian temporarily.””
I read the paper.
The language was complicated.
Legal.
Cold.
But one sentence stood out.
*The child shall remain under protected custody until biological disputes are resolved.*
I looked up.
“This isn’t an adoption.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did you tell me she was?””
She couldn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“Because Victor wanted Lily hidden.””
My hands trembled.
“From who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Everyone.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know where Victor was?””
“No.””
“Did you ever see him again?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
“When?””
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
“Last year.””
My heart dropped.
“When he came to the house?””
She nodded.
Lily’s words came back.
She told me to remember her.
“No.””
I stepped back.
“What did he say to her?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“He said he was her family.””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“He talked to Lily?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I found him in her room.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“You let a stranger near my daughter?””
“I didn’t know who he was until after.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he threatened us.””
The room went quiet.
“What threat?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He said if I told anyone, he would reveal everything.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Everything?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My past.””
I stared at her.
“What past?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked toward the old bookcase.
She opened the hidden door.
Inside the small room was an old wooden box.
She pulled it out.
“I kept this because I knew one day the truth would come out.””
She opened it.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
All addressed to one person.
Victor.
I picked one up.
The first line made my stomach turn.
*I did what you asked. Lily is no longer with Rachel.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“You worked with him.””
She started crying.
“I thought I was saving her.””
Rachel whispered:
“You stole her.””
Vanessa looked broken.
“I know.””
Then the lights went out.
Every light in the house.
The room went completely dark.
Lily screamed upstairs.
I ran.
“Lily!””
I reached her room.
She was standing beside the window.
Shaking.
“What happened?””
She pointed outside.
“Daddy.””
I looked through the glass.
A black car sat at the end of the driveway.
The headlights were on.
A figure stood beside it.
Watching us.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
One sentence.
*Bring Lily outside, or you’ll never learn why she was chosen.*
I looked at the stranger in the driveway.
May you like
Then at my daughter.
And I realized the secret behind the wall was only the beginning.
