Chapter 8: The Memory She Buried
I didn’t open the envelope.
Not immediately.
I couldn’t.
Because somehow, holding a child’s handwriting from twelve years ago felt like holding a piece of time that should have stayed buried.
Lily climbed onto the chair beside me.
“What is it?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know yet.””
Rachel watched her daughter with tears in her eyes.
“She was so little.””
I looked at Rachel.
“You wrote this?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She touched the envelope.
“Lily did.””
My heart stopped.
“She was two.””
Rachel nodded.
“She couldn’t write much. But she drew pictures. She had someone help her put the words together.””
I carefully opened it.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
A child’s drawing covered most of the page.
A house.
A sun.
Three people holding hands.
And one person standing behind a wall.
Below it were crooked letters.
*Daddy is behind the door.*
Daniel covered his mouth.
I looked at him.
He looked like the world had just collapsed.
“She remembered.””
Rachel nodded.
“Children remember more than adults think.””
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“No, she was too young.””
Rachel turned toward her.
“You needed her to be.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you tell me she didn’t remember anything?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I thought it was better.””
“For who?””
She couldn’t answer.
I stood.
“I need air.””
I walked outside.
The cold night hit my face.
For years, I thought my biggest fear was losing my family.
I never imagined the truth would be what destroyed the picture I had of it.
A few minutes later, Daniel stepped outside.
“You hate me.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
He nodded.
“That’s fair.””
“You watched my daughter grow up from behind a wall.””
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
“That’s not normal.””
“No.””
He accepted it.
“I know.””
I studied him.
“Then why?””
He looked through the window.
At Lily.
“Because every day I thought I would lose her again.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Daniel continued.
“When Vanessa found me after the accident, I was injured. She told me Rachel was dead. She told me Lily was safe.””
“And you believed her?””
“I was broken.””
He looked down.
“I trusted her.””
I looked back inside.
“And then?””
“She brought me here.””
“Why hide you?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Because she was afraid I would tell the truth.””
The front door opened.
Vanessa stepped outside.
“I never wanted to hurt anyone.””
I turned.
“Then why did you keep lying?””
She cried quietly.
“Because every time I planned to tell you, I imagined losing Lily.””
I looked at her.
“She was never yours to lose.””
The words hurt.
I saw them hurt her.
But they were true.
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“I know.””
For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.
She just admitted it.
“I loved her.””
Rachel came outside behind her.
“So did I.””
The two sisters looked at each other.
And for a moment, I saw something beneath all the anger.
Two women who had both lost years of their lives.
But only one of them had lost her child.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
My blood froze.
It was Lily.
Taken that same night.
Inside our house.
While we were all downstairs.
The next message arrived.
*You should ask Vanessa why Lily was never really adopted.*
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked back at the house.
“Who sent that?””
Vanessa saw my face.
And she knew.
“What did they say?””
I showed her.
The color disappeared from her face.
Rachel stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He found us.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward Lily.
Then toward the darkness outside.
May you like
And said a name I had never heard before.
“The man who paid for Lily’s disappearance.””
