The Wall Behind the Bookcase / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Room Nobody Knew About

I didn’t move for almost a full minute.

I just stood there, staring at the bookcase.

At the crack.

At the place where a voice had come from inside my house.

My house.

The place where my daughter slept.

The place where I kissed my wife goodnight.

The place where I thought my family was safe.

“Daddy?””

Lily touched my hand.

I looked down at her.

She wasn’t scared anymore.

That terrified me.

A child should not be comfortable talking to someone hidden behind a wall.

“Sweetheart,” I said carefully, “who is behind there?””

She tilted her head.

“Your friend.””

I swallowed.

“My friend?””

She nodded.

“The sad man.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Lily, go to your room.””

Her voice was sharp.

Lily immediately stepped closer to me.

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Don’t order her around.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t surprised.

She knew.

I walked toward the bookcase.

Vanessa stepped in front of me.

“Ethan, stop.””

I had never heard fear in her voice before.

Not real fear.

“What is behind this wall?””

“Nothing.””

I laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“I heard someone thank our daughter.””

“It’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I grabbed the side of the bookcase.

It was heavier than I expected.

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Don’t!””

That one word confirmed everything.

I pushed harder.

The wooden shelves scraped against the floor.

Behind it was a section of wall that looked slightly different from the rest.

A hidden door.

My hands went cold.

“Vanessa…”

She didn’t answer.

I found a small handle disguised beneath the paint.

When I pulled it, the door opened with a long, painful creak.

A smell escaped.

Dust.

Old wood.

And something else.

Something like a room that hadn’t seen sunlight in years.

I turned on my phone flashlight and looked inside.

The space was narrow.

Barely wide enough for a person to stand.

But it continued deeper into the wall.

There was a small mattress.

A blanket.

A water bottle.

A stack of old newspapers.

And a photograph.

I stepped inside.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered:

“Ethan, please.””

I turned.

“Who lives here?””

Silence.

Then a voice came from deeper inside.

“Vanessa?””

The voice was older than before.

Weak.

But clear.

My wife closed her eyes.

The man continued.

“I told you she would find out eventually.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like she had been holding up a wall for years and finally couldn’t anymore.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man slowly appeared from the darkness.

He looked exhausted.

Thin.

His gray hair fell around his face.

But there was something familiar about him.

Something I couldn’t place.

He looked at me.

Then at Lily.

“I’m sorry.””

My daughter smiled.

“See? Daddy knows you now.””

I stared at the stranger.

“Why is my daughter feeding you?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She looked down.

Finally, the man answered.

“Because she is the only person in this house who treated me like I was human.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Ethan, you need to listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need answers.””

The man slowly sat down on the mattress.

“My name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

Until he added:

“Daniel Parker.””

My wife’s face changed.

And suddenly I saw recognition.

Not from me.

From Vanessa.

She knew exactly who he was.

I looked at her.

“Why does that name scare you?””

She whispered:

“Because he’s supposed to be dead.””

The room went silent.

Even Lily stopped smiling.

I looked back at Daniel.

The man who had been hidden inside my home.

The man my daughter called my friend.

The man my wife claimed didn’t exist.

“Vanessa,” I said slowly, “what did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, Daniel reached toward the old photograph on the floor.

He picked it up.

Then he handed it to me.

My fingers trembled as I took it.

Because the picture showed a younger Vanessa.

Standing beside Daniel.

Holding a baby.

A baby wearing the same bracelet Lily wore every day.

And written on the back of the photo were four words that made my entire world fall apart.

“Before Ethan knew the truth.””
