Chapter 3: The Secret Vanessa Buried
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
A baby.
And a message written years before I ever suspected anything was wrong.
Before Ethan knew the truth.
“What is this?””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I held up the picture.
“No more half-truths.””
Lily stood beside me, confused.
“Daddy, why are you mad?””
That question hurt more than anything else.
Because my daughter had no idea she was standing in the middle of a storm.
I crouched down and held her hand.
“I’m not mad at you, sweetheart.””
She looked toward Daniel.
“Is Uncle Daniel okay?””
Uncle.
The word hit me.
She had known him longer than I realized.
“How long has he been here?””
Nobody answered.
I stood.
“How long?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
She shook her head.
“Not like this.””
Daniel gave a tired laugh.
“After all these years, you still want to control the story.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?””
Daniel leaned against the wall.
“Tell him that you left me here?””
My chest tightened.
“Left him?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
She looked away.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Ten years ago, Vanessa and I were married.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I felt like the floor had disappeared.
“No.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Ethan, listen—”
“No.””
I backed away.
“You were married before me?””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“I’m her first husband.””
I looked at Lily.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
The pieces were moving.
But they didn’t fit.
“Why were you hidden in my house?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because Vanessa told everyone I was gone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Gone?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Ethan, there are things you don’t understand.””
“You’re right.””
I pointed toward the hidden room.
“I don’t understand why a man is living behind a wall in my house.””
Lily covered her ears.
“Daddy, don’t yell.””
I immediately lowered my voice.
She was still my little girl.
No matter what secrets surrounded us.
Daniel watched her carefully.
“You’re a good father.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t talk to me like you know me.””
His expression changed.
“I know more than you think.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Stop.””
Daniel ignored her.
“I watched you every night.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I watched you read Lily bedtime stories. I watched you fix her broken toys. I watched you sing when you thought nobody could hear.””
I stepped back.
The idea made my skin crawl.
“You were spying on my family?””
“No.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I was protecting it.””
“Protecting it?””
I almost shouted.
“You were hiding in my walls.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I had nowhere else.””
Vanessa grabbed the photo from my hand.
“This is complicated.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that whenever you don’t want to tell the truth.””
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Of me.””
The silence afterward felt endless.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened between you two?””
He stared at the floor.
Then he said:
“Vanessa and I had a daughter.””
My breathing stopped.
“No.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Our daughter was born twelve years ago.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel…”
But he continued.
“She disappeared.””
The room became completely still.
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The little girl who had spent every day feeding a stranger behind a wall.
A child who somehow knew a secret nobody told her.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Daniel looked at me.
And his next words changed everything.
“Lily isn’t the first child Vanessa lost.””
Vanessa started crying.
Not angry tears.
Not fake tears.
The kind that come when a person has carried something too heavy for too long.
I turned to her.
“Tell me.””
She wiped her face.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
She looked at the hidden room.
Then at Daniel.
Then finally at me.
“From the truth about how Lily came into our family.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It came from inside the hidden room.
Daniel slowly reached into an old box.
He pulled out a small, cracked phone.
A phone that should not have been working.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned pale.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
“It’s impossible.””
The phone rang again.
May you like
And the name appearing on the screen was one Vanessa had spent twelve years trying to erase.
*Lily’s biological mother.*
