Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
I looked at Vanessa like she was a stranger.
Not because I didn’t recognize her.
Because I suddenly realized I never truly knew her.
“We need to leave?””
My voice was quiet.
“You kept a man inside our wall for years, lied about your sister, hid Lily’s past, and now you want to run?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not run.””
“Then what?””
“Survive.””
The word hung in the air.
Daniel stepped forward.
“She’s afraid.””
I looked at him.
“Of what?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more.
I walked toward Vanessa.
“Who sent that message?””
She looked away.
“Vanessa.””
“I don’t know.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I expect you to understand that there are things worse than what you already know.””
I stared at her.
“Try me.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she walked to the kitchen counter.
She opened a drawer.
Inside was a folder.
Old.
Dusty.
Hidden beneath cleaning supplies.
She placed it on the table.
“I kept this because I thought one day I would have to explain.””
I opened it.
The first page was a police report.
The date was twelve years earlier.
The night Daniel disappeared.
I read quickly.
Vehicle accident.
Driver missing.
Presumed deceased.
Then I saw the name.
Daniel Parker.
My eyes moved lower.
A witness statement.
I read the first sentence.
And my stomach dropped.
*The last person seen near Daniel Parker’s vehicle was Vanessa Parker.*
I looked up.
“Why does this say you were there?””
Vanessa sat down.
“I was.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“You never told me that.””
She looked at him.
“Because if I did, you would have hated me.””
“I already do.””
The words hurt.
Even Daniel looked surprised by his own honesty.
Vanessa took a breath.
“That night, I followed Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought he was going to hurt Rachel.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never touched her.””
“I didn’t know that.””
She looked at the report.
“Rachel called me crying. She said Daniel was coming after her.””
I frowned.
“Was he?””
Daniel answered immediately.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I was going to meet Rachel because she wanted to give Lily back.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew Rachel wanted to give Lily back?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I found Lily first.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked upstairs.
“At the accident scene, I found the car.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And?””
“And Lily was there.””
My heart stopped.
“She was in the car?””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She was standing nearby.””
She covered her face.
“She was crying.””
The room became silent.
“What happened next?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I picked her up.””
“And Daniel?””
She looked at him.
“He was alive.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The pain on his face was impossible to ignore.
“You left me there?””
Vanessa cried.
“I thought you were dead.””
“You just said I was alive.””
“I was scared.””
The silence that followed felt unbearable.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
She whispered:
“I ran.””
My chest tightened.
“You left him?””
“Yes.””
“And took Lily?””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped backward.
Like the truth physically hurt him.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Rachel was dead.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Rachel died that night.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“No.””
Vanessa looked down.
“The car wasn’t the only accident.””
I felt dizzy.
Too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A small voice.
“Mommy?””
We all turned.
Lily stood at the top of the stairs.
Holding another photograph.
Her face was confused.
“Who is this?””
I walked toward her.
“What did you find?””
She looked at the picture.
Then at Daniel.
Then at me.
“This lady came to my room last year.””
My blood ran cold.
“What lady?””
Lily pointed at the photograph.
“The lady in the picture.””
Nobody moved.
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Lily frowned.
“No, Mommy.””
She held the photo tighter.
“She told me to remember her.””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Lily... what did she say?””
My daughter looked at us with innocent eyes.
Then she answered:
“She said she was coming back for me.””
May you like
And from somewhere outside the house...
A car door slammed.
