Chapter 11: The Last Secret

The room went completely still.

For a second, nobody reacted.

Then Rachel laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“No.””

Victor looked at her.

“You always were slow to accept reality.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“You are not her father.””

Victor smiled.

“Biologically?””

He looked at Lily.

“No.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what are you saying?””

Victor turned toward me.

“I’m saying I created the circumstances that brought her here.””

I hated the way he said it.

Like he was describing a project.

Not a child.

I picked up the envelope.

“What is this?””

“Open it.””

I didn’t.

“Tell me.””

Victor walked toward the table.

“Before Lily was born, Rachel and Daniel were struggling.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“They were fighting. They were separating. Their family was collapsing.””

Rachel whispered:

“You manipulated us.””

Victor smiled.

“I gave people what they wanted.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did he do?””

Victor answered.

“I offered Vanessa a solution.””

My heart sank.

Vanessa started crying.

“I was desperate.””

“Desperate enough to listen to him?””

She looked away.

Victor continued.

“She wanted a child. Rachel wanted stability. Daniel wanted control.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re twisting everything.””

Victor looked at him.

“Am I?””

The question hung there.

I looked at the people around me.

All of them had been broken by something.

But Victor had used those broken pieces.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a document.

A medical report.

I scanned the page.

Then froze.

“This is a DNA test.””

Rachel went pale.

Victor nodded.

“Correct.””

I looked at the results.

Then at Lily.

The words blurred.

“No.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Victor spoke calmly.

“Lily is Daniel and Rachel’s biological daughter.””

I exhaled.

“Then why say you’re her father?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because I was there when everyone else failed.””

Rachel’s anger exploded.

“You don’t get credit for destroying lives.””

Victor looked at her.

“You think love is enough?””

Nobody answered.

He pointed toward Lily.

“She survived because people like me made decisions.””

I stepped closer.

“She survived because people loved her.””

Victor studied me.

“That’s what makes you different.””

I hated hearing that.

“What do you want?””

His expression changed.

Finally.

The mask slipped.

“I want what I was promised.””

My eyes narrowed.

“By who?””

Victor looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“No.””

“What did you promise him?””

She didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“She promised me that when Lily turned four, she would bring her back.””

The room exploded.

“No.””

Rachel grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

“You promised him my daughter?””

Vanessa cried.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“By giving her away?””

“I never planned to do it!””

Victor laughed.

“That’s why I came.””

He looked at Lily.

“She is four now.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at my daughter.

The same age she was when this nightmare finally found us.

Victor stepped closer.

“I waited twelve years.””

I moved between them.

“You’re not taking her.””

Victor looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

He reached into his pocket.

Not for a weapon.

For his phone.

He showed me the screen.

A court order.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

“A custody request.””

Rachel looked.

Then her face changed.

“He filed this?””

Victor nodded.

“Years ago.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked broken.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She whispered:

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded exactly like every other lie.

Victor turned toward the door.

“I’ll give you one night.””

I stared at him.

“For what?””

“To decide.””

“Decide what?””

He smiled.

“Whether you want Lily to know the truth from you…”

He paused.

“Or from me.””

After he left, nobody moved.

The silence lasted until Lily finally spoke.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

She was crying.

“Is he taking me away?””

My heart shattered.

I picked her up.

“No.””

She held onto me.

“But everyone keeps leaving.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because she was right.

Everyone had been fighting over her.

Everyone had been protecting their own pain.

And nobody had asked what she wanted.

Then Daniel walked toward us.

He looked at Lily.

And whispered:

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“The reason Victor chose Lily…”

He looked at Rachel.

Then Vanessa.

May you like

Then me.

“Was because of something that happened the night she was born.””
