Chapter 12: The Night Lily Was Born
Nobody slept that night.
How could we?
The house that once felt like home now felt like a courtroom.
Every room held a secret.
Every wall held a memory.
Especially one wall.
The one that had hidden Daniel.
The one that had hidden the truth.
Lily fell asleep in my arms around midnight.
I stayed beside her bed.
Watching her breathe.
Trying to understand how a child so innocent could carry so much history.
Eventually, Daniel came to the doorway.
“Can I talk to you?””
I nodded.
We went downstairs.
The others were waiting.
Daniel sat at the table.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not in years.
In exhaustion.
“When Lily was born, something happened.””
Rachel looked down.
“I didn’t want to tell anyone.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because I was afraid.””
Daniel continued.
“Rachel almost died during delivery.””
My chest tightened.
“But Lily was healthy.””
“Yes.””
He looked at the photo on the table.
“She was perfect.””
A sad smile appeared.
“Everyone loved her.””
Everyone.
Except Victor.
I waited.
Daniel took a breath.
“Victor was at the hospital.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he was Rachel’s employer.””
Rachel nodded.
“He came to visit after the birth.””
“And?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“He saw Lily.””
The room became quiet.
Vanessa whispered:
“That was when everything changed.””
I looked at her.
“What did he say?””
She closed her eyes.
“He said she was special.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I thought he was just being strange.””
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“But then he started asking questions.””
“What questions?””
“About our family.””
I felt a chill.
Victor had been there from the beginning.
Daniel continued.
“He wanted to know everything. Our finances. Our relationship. Our problems.””
Rachel whispered:
“He knew we were struggling.””
“And he used it.””
Daniel nodded.
“He offered help.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Your help.””
She nodded.
“He told me I could have the family I always wanted.””
My stomach turned.
“He offered you Lily?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“He offered me a chance to protect her.””
Rachel looked at her sister.
“You believed him.””
“I was scared.””
The room went quiet.
Then Rachel said something that shocked me.
“Because Victor told Vanessa the truth.””
I looked at her.
“What truth?””
Rachel looked at Lily’s bedroom.
“About me.””
I frowned.
“What about you?””
She whispered:
“I was sick.””
Everyone went silent.
“What?””
Rachel nodded.
“I had a condition that could have killed me.””
Daniel reached for her hand.
“I didn’t know how serious it was.””
Rachel continued.
“Victor knew.””
My face hardened.
“He used your illness.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“He convinced Vanessa that Lily would lose both parents.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you believed him.””
She nodded.
“I thought I was saving a child from losing everyone.””
The anger I felt became mixed with something else.
Tragedy.
Everyone had been manipulated.
But Lily still suffered.
Daniel looked at me.
“The reason Victor chose Lily wasn’t because of her blood.””
I waited.
“It was because she was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Rachel answered.
“That he could control people.””
The words were heavy.
Victor didn’t want Lily.
He wanted victory.
A symbol.
A reminder that he could break a family.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
From Victor.
I opened it.
*You finally know the story. Now ask yourself one question.*
A second message appeared.
*Who told Ethan the truth first?*
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked confused.
Rachel looked afraid.
Then Vanessa suddenly stood.
Her face drained of color.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She stared at the phone.
“He knows.””
“Knows what?””
She whispered:
“That Lily wasn’t the only person he changed.””
The message continued.
*Check the adoption papers again.*
I grabbed the folder.
I opened the documents.
This time, I looked carefully.
The signature.
The dates.
The names.
Then I saw it.
A line I had never noticed.
A line hidden beneath the legal language.
My hands began shaking.
Because the person who signed Lily’s adoption paperwork wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was me.
And beneath my signature was a note I had never seen before.
*The adoptive father agrees to raise the child without knowledge of her original custody arrangement.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you make me sign?””
She started crying.
And before she could answer...
The front door opened.
Someone walked inside.
Someone who should have been impossible.
Someone who knew my name.
“Ethan.””
I turned.
And saw the person standing there.
May you like
The person who had been missing from the story all along.
My own father.
