Chapter 5: The Girl in the Photograph

I took the photograph from Lily’s hands.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like it might break.

Or maybe like I might.

The picture was old.

The edges were worn.

A younger woman smiled at the camera while holding a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

The woman was not Vanessa.

It was Rachel.

I knew because I had just heard her voice.

But the baby...

The baby had the same bracelet Lily wore every day.

A tiny silver bracelet with a small heart charm.

The bracelet Vanessa told me was a gift from her grandmother.

My fingers went numb.

“Where did you find this?””

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“Behind the couch.””

Vanessa appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Her face changed when she saw the photo.

“No.””

Just one word.

But it carried years of fear.

I turned toward her.

“How many lies are there?””

She looked away.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

I held up the picture.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel walked into the room slowly.

For the first time, he looked less like a prisoner and more like a father.

A broken father.

“Tell him everything, Vanessa.””

She looked at Daniel with anger.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

His expression hardened.

“You kept my daughter away from me.””

“And you weren’t supposed to survive.””

The room froze.

I stared at Vanessa.

“What did you just say?””

She immediately looked horrified.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You said he wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at the floor.

Then he whispered:

“She thought I died.””

My eyes moved between them.

“Why?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Because twelve years ago, there was an accident.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Don’t.””

But Daniel continued.

“Rachel and I were going through a divorce.””

I listened.

Every word felt heavier.

“Lily was only a baby. Rachel had temporary custody while we worked things out.””

He looked at the photograph.

“One night, Rachel disappeared with Lily.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I found them.””

I turned to her.

“You found them?””

She looked at me.

“I was Rachel’s sister.””

The room became silent.

I felt like I had been hit.

“Rachel is your sister?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

She cried quietly.

“I was ashamed.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She took Lily and ran.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because you were dangerous.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Is that what you told yourself?””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

They both stopped.

I needed facts.

Not accusations.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I found Rachel and Lily months later.””

“And?””

“And someone attacked my car.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“I survived.””

He looked toward the hidden room.

“But everyone believed I didn’t.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Did you know he was alive?””

Her silence answered.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The confession was barely audible.

My chest hurt.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you hid him here?””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Daniel wanted to take Lily back.””

Daniel spoke calmly.

“Because she was my daughter.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Because you wanted revenge.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Did I?””

Neither answered.

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting on the couch, hugging her rabbit.

Watching adults destroy the world she trusted.

I hated that.

I hated every person in this room for making her stand there.

I knelt beside her.

“Lily, go to your room for me.””

“But Daddy—”

“Please.””

She nodded and walked upstairs.

Only after she disappeared did I turn back.

“Why did Lily call him my friend?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel answered.

“Because I asked her not to tell you who I was.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to know if she remembered me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was too young when I lost her.””

He looked upstairs.

“But she remembered something.””

“What?””

He smiled sadly.

“She remembered my voice.””

A chill ran through me.

The same voice.

The voice that whispered her name through the wall.

The voice my daughter somehow trusted.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You are finally hearing the truth. But you still don’t know what Vanessa did the night Lily disappeared.*

I looked at the screen.

Then at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

Because she knew who sent it.

And before I could ask...

May you like

She whispered:

“Ethan, we need to leave this house.””
