Chapter 7: The Woman at the Door

The sound of the car door closing outside made every person in the room stop breathing.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Lily seemed to understand that something had changed.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely pale.

Not the kind of fear someone feels when they hear bad news.

The kind of fear someone feels when the past finally comes back.

“Who is outside?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked toward the front door.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Lily.

And that was when I knew.

Whoever was outside wasn’t a stranger.

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I squeezed her fingers.

“It’s okay.””

But I didn’t believe my own words.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No one opens that door.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because if it’s who I think it is…”

The doorbell rang again.

This time, slower.

Almost patiently.

Daniel moved toward the window.

He pulled the curtain back slightly.

Then he froze.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked over.

“Daniel.””

His hand trembled as he pointed outside.

I looked through the glass.

A woman stood on the porch.

She looked older than the woman in the photograph.

Her hair was darker.

Her face thinner.

But I knew immediately.

It was her.

Rachel.

Lily’s biological mother.

The woman everyone said was dead.

My head spun.

“She’s alive.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word came out like a confession.

I turned around.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“Then why did you look like you expected her?””

Vanessa had no answer.

The doorbell rang again.

Rachel’s voice came through the door.

“Vanessa.””

Lily looked confused.

“She knows Mommy.””

I walked toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“After everything you hid from me, you don’t get to tell me what I can do.””

I opened the door.

Rachel stood there.

For several seconds, she just stared at me.

Her eyes moved past my shoulder.

Toward Lily.

And the moment she saw her daughter, her entire expression broke.

“Lily.””

My daughter stepped behind me.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she didn’t understand.

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’ve waited so long.””

I looked at her carefully.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Rachel gave a sad smile.

“I know.””

Behind me, Vanessa whispered:

“Rachel…”

Rachel looked at her sister.

The warmth disappeared instantly.

“You.””

The anger in that one word was sharper than any scream.

Lily looked between them.

“Why are you mad at Mommy?””

Rachel looked at her.

And for a moment, she softened.

“Because your mommy took something from me.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I saved her.””

Rachel laughed quietly.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You saved yourself.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both women looked at me.

“I want the truth.””

Rachel nodded.

“You deserve it.””

She walked inside.

Daniel remained near the wall, watching her.

The two of them looked at each other.

Years of pain passed between them without a word.

“You survived,” Daniel whispered.

Rachel looked away.

“So did you.””

That sentence told me more than any explanation could.

They both had secrets.

They both had scars.

But only one thing mattered.

Lily.

Rachel sat across from us at the kitchen table.

She looked at my daughter.

“She was only two when everything happened.””

Lily held her rabbit tighter.

Rachel continued.

“I was leaving Daniel because I thought our marriage was destroying both of us.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I deserved that.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“But Lily deserved both her parents.””

She took a breath.

“Then Vanessa found out I was leaving with Lily.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I thought I was protecting her.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You convinced yourself of that.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Because Vanessa wanted a child.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“She had lost three pregnancies.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She said nothing.

“She loved Lily,” Rachel continued.

“I knew that. I saw it.””

“Then why didn’t you take her back?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because Vanessa disappeared with her.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked shocked.

“I thought you were dead.””

Rachel looked at him.

“I almost was.””

She turned to me.

“After the accident, I spent months trying to find them.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She changed everything.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out a document.

She placed it on the table.

“This is the adoption agreement Ethan signed.””

My hands went cold.

I remembered that day.

The paperwork.

The explanations.

The lawyer.

Everything seemed normal.

Rachel pointed to the bottom.

“Look at the date.””

I did.

My breathing stopped.

The document was signed before Daniel’s accident.

Before Rachel disappeared.

Before Vanessa told me Lily needed a new home.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew Lily had parents.””

She started crying.

“Ethan…”

I pushed the papers away.

“No.””

Rachel leaned closer.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

She looked toward the hidden wall.

“Daniel wasn’t the only person Vanessa hid from you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Rachel reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

She placed it in front of me.

“My daughter wrote this before she disappeared.””

I stared at the envelope.

The handwriting was tiny.

Childlike.

May you like

And written across the front were five words.

*For Lily, when she remembers.*
