Chapter 9: The Birthplace of the Secret
I replayed the call twenty times.
Same voice.
Same calm tone.
Same confidence.
My father wasn’t scared.
He wasn’t hiding.
He wanted me to know he was close.
And that terrified me.
“Claire,” Mark said quietly.
I looked at him.
“He called from somewhere near Lily’s birthplace.””
Detective Alvarez immediately began tracing the number.
But Robert had planned ahead.
The call location was hidden.
A fake signal.
A dead end.
Just like everything else he had done.
The next morning, Daniel asked to speak with me alone.
I met him in the hospital cafeteria.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“I owe you an apology.””
I shook my head.
“For what?””
“For the life you gave Lily.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He looked down.
“You loved her because I couldn’t.””
The pain in his eyes was real.
“You raised her when I couldn’t even hold her.””
I swallowed.
“She’s still my daughter.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“I know.””
A quiet moment passed.
Then he reached into his bag and pulled out an old envelope.
“This was for Lily.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“A letter I wrote when she was born.””
“Why didn’t she get it?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because Robert took it.””
I opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a letter written three months after Lily’s birth.
My hands shook as I read.
*My beautiful daughter, if you ever read this, know that I never abandoned you. Every day away from you was a punishment I never deserved to survive.*
I stopped reading.
The words blurred.
“She deserves to know the truth,” Daniel whispered.
“Yes.””
But even as I said it, I worried.
How much truth could a sixteen-year-old carry?
When I returned home, Lily was sitting on the porch.
She looked at me.
“Was he nice?””
I sat beside her.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I don’t know how to feel.””
“That’s okay.””
She looked at the street.
“I always imagined finding my real parents would fix everything.””
I touched her shoulder.
“Sometimes answers create new pain.””
She looked at me.
“Are you still my mom?””
My heart broke.
I held her hand.
“I have been your mom every day since I met you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Even now?””
“Especially now.””
That evening, Detective Alvarez called.
“We found something.””
I immediately stood.
“What?””
“Robert’s travel records.””
“And?””
“He never left the country.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“He created the appearance of leaving.””
Mark looked at me.
“Then where is he?””
Detective Alvarez was silent.
“Mrs. Davis, your father has been living under another identity.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Where?””
“We’re still confirming.””
Then he said something worse.
“He’s been nearby.””
I looked around the house.
The place where my daughter slept.
The place where we thought we were safe.
My father had been watching.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
At 2:13 a.m., I heard something downstairs.
A noise.
A drawer opening.
I grabbed my phone and quietly walked down.
The kitchen light was on.
My heart raced.
Someone was standing near the counter.
I reached for the lamp switch.
The person turned.
And I froze.
It wasn’t Robert.
It was my mother.
“Mom?””
She looked terrified.
“Claire.””
“What are you doing here?””
She held a folder against her chest.
“I came to tell you the truth.””
I stared at her.
“You’ve had more secrets?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
She placed the folder on the table.
“This is everything your father never wanted you to see.””
I opened it.
Inside were medical records.
Old photographs.
And one document dated sixteen years ago.
My hands began shaking.
Because the document was signed by my mother.
And the title at the top read:
*Temporary Custody Transfer Agreement.*
I looked at her.
“What did you do?””
She whispered:
“I helped your father take Lily.””
The room went silent.
Then she added:
“But I didn’t know who she really was.””
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message from Robert.
