Chapter 11: The Brother Who Never Died

Detective Alvarez arrived before sunrise.

By then, I had shown the photograph to Mark, Daniel, Rebecca, and my mother.

Everyone had the same reaction.

Shock.

Fear.

Disbelief.

But nobody looked as terrified as my mother.

Because she knew something.

Something she still hadn’t told us.

Detective Alvarez placed the photograph on the table.

“Are we certain this person is Michael Davis?””

My mother nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

She looked away.

“Because I saw him the night he disappeared.””

The detective leaned forward.

“Start from the beginning.””

My mother wrapped her hands around a cup of coffee.

“I was young. I was pregnant with Claire. Robert and Michael were already fighting.””

“About what?””

“Money. Secrets. Power.””

She swallowed.

“Michael was different from Robert. He believed people deserved the truth.””

Rebecca quietly said:

“Daniel was the same.””

My mother nodded.

“Exactly.””

The similarities made my stomach twist.

My father destroyed anyone who believed in honesty.

“What happened that night?”” Detective Alvarez asked.

My mother looked at me.

“I was in labor.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“The night I was born.””

“Yes.””

She continued.

“Robert left the hospital for several hours. He said it was an emergency.””

“But he went to meet Michael.””

She nodded.

“When he came back, he looked different.””

“How?””

“Calm.””

That scared her even now.

“Your father was never calm after an argument. But that night, he was peaceful.””

My mother’s voice shook.

“He told me Michael was gone.””

Nobody spoke.

“What did you think happened?””

She looked down.

“I was afraid to ask.””

My anger rose.

“You just accepted it?””

She flinched.

“I was scared.””

“You should have protected people!””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Where has Michael been all these years?””

Nobody knew.

Until Helen arrived.

The attorney who had helped uncover Daniel’s evidence walked into the room holding a folder.

“I may know.””

Everyone turned.

She placed the folder down.

“Michael Davis was declared missing thirty years ago.””

Detective Alvarez opened it.

“But?””

Helen looked at me.

“But someone continued making payments under his name.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

She pointed to the records.

“Robert Davis.””

Mark frowned.

“Why would he pay money to someone he wanted gone?””

Helen answered:

“Because he wasn’t hiding Michael.””

She paused.

“He was controlling him.””

A chill moved through the room.

My father had not erased his brother.

He had kept him hidden.

“For what purpose?”” I asked.

Helen looked at the photograph.

“Michael knew where the original evidence was.””

“The evidence that could destroy Robert?””

“Yes.””

My mother whispered:

“The same evidence Daniel had.””

Helen nodded.

“But Robert never found it.””

Detective Alvarez stood.

“So Michael has been alive and hidden this entire time.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Helen opened the folder.

“There is an address.””

Everyone gathered around.

I recognized the location immediately.

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Mark looked at me.

“What?””

I pointed at the address.

“That’s the old family cabin.””

The place where my father took Lily every summer.

The place he called his “special place.””

The place nobody was allowed to visit.

Detective Alvarez grabbed his jacket.

“We’re going there.””

Before we left, Lily stopped me.

“Mom.””

I turned.

She looked scared.

“I need to know something.””

“What?””

“If Grandpa did all of this…”

She swallowed.

“Did he ever love me?””

The question destroyed me.

Because I knew the answer was complicated.

I knelt beside her.

“I don’t know what was in his heart.””

She looked down.

“But I know what was in yours.””

She cried.

“You chose me.””

“Yes.””

I hugged her.

“I chose you every day.””

Hours later, we arrived at the cabin.

The place looked exactly as I remembered.

Old wood.

Tall trees.

A peaceful lake nearby.

A place that should have represented family.

Instead, it represented secrets.

Detective Alvarez approached the door.

It was unlocked.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Except one thing.

A fresh cup of coffee sat on the table.

Someone had been there recently.

Mark whispered:

“We’re not alone.””

Then we heard footsteps upstairs.

Detective Alvarez raised his voice.

“Police. Come downstairs.””

Silence.

Then a man appeared at the top of the stairs.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My breath disappeared.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it in the photograph.

Michael Davis looked down at us.

May you like

And the first words he said were:

“Claire, your father has been waiting for you.””
