Chapter 2: The Secret My Family Buried

I drove through the night like I was running from a nightmare.

The address on the note belonged to my parents’ house.

The same house where I had grown up.

The same house where my daughter had spent every Sunday afternoon for almost ten years.

I gripped the steering wheel so tightly my fingers hurt.

My father, Robert Davis, had always been the person everyone trusted.

To our neighbors, he was the kind old man who fixed broken fences.

To my friends, he was the funny grandfather who brought too many gifts on holidays.

To Lily, he was Grandpa.

The thought made me feel sick.

I pulled into my parents’ driveway and didn’t even turn off the engine.

The lights were on.

I ran to the front door and pushed it open.

“Mom!””

My mother, Eleanor, was sitting in the living room.

She didn’t look surprised.

That scared me more than anything.

She calmly placed her teacup on the table.

“Claire.””

My hands shook as I held up the ring.

“Where is Dad?””

Her eyes moved to the ring.

For the first time, her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Where is he?”” I repeated.

She looked away.

“He left.””

My voice rose.

“Left where?””

“Claire…”

“Where is my father?””

She remained silent.

I stepped closer.

“Mom, Lily is pregnant.””

The room became still.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Still.

Like she already knew.

That was when my heart truly broke.

“You knew.””

My mother looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Something?””

I laughed bitterly.

“My daughter is carrying a child, and you’re calling that something?””

She stood slowly.

“You need to calm down.””

“Don’t tell me to calm down.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“You let her go there every weekend.””

My mother’s face hardened.

“Watch your words.””

“No. You watch yours.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“She trusted him.””

My mother closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked older than I had ever seen her.

Then she said something that made my blood freeze.

“Your father said Lily would never remember.””

I stopped breathing.

“What did you say?””

She immediately looked away.

“I shouldn’t have said that.””

I stepped closer.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom, what did you mean?””

The silence was unbearable.

Then my phone rang.

It was Mark.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice was sharp.

“Claire, you need to come home.””

“What happened?””

“There’s something else.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“I found Lily’s adoption records.””

I looked at my mother.

“What adoption records?””

Mark was quiet for a second.

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

“Your father took them.””

My hand lowered.

The world seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“Every document. The original paperwork. Everything.””

I looked around my childhood home.

The walls.

The photographs.

The memories.

All suddenly felt fake.

“Why would my father have Lily’s adoption files?””

My mother didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Her silence was the answer.

I walked toward her slowly.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

She sat down.

“My husband was not the man you thought he was.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked toward the front door.

“Of what he would do if anyone found out.””

A cold wind entered through the open doorway behind me.

I turned around.

For the first time in my life, my father’s house didn’t feel like home.

It felt like a crime scene.

I returned home twenty minutes later.

Mark was waiting in the living room with a folder in his hands.

Lily was upstairs.

Sleeping.

Or pretending to sleep.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

He opened the folder.

Inside were adoption documents.

Old hospital records.

A birth certificate.

And one photograph.

A photograph of a baby.

My baby.

Except something was wrong.

Mark pointed at the bottom of the document.

“Claire, look at the date.””

I looked.

Then my heart stopped.

Because the adoption papers were not the only thing my father had hidden.

There was another name listed as Lily’s biological family.

And it was someone I had known my entire life.
