Chapter 6: The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight

We drove home faster than we should have.

I didn’t care about the speed.

I didn’t care about anything except getting to Lily.

The entire drive, one thought repeated in my mind.

My father had known.

He had always known.

Every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every time he hugged Lily and called her his granddaughter.

He knew the truth.

And he watched me love a child he had stolen.

When we arrived, Lily was sitting on the couch holding the journal.

She looked smaller than she had the day before.

“Mom.””

I ran to her.

She hugged me tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

I held her face in my hands.

“You don’t apologize for what someone else did.””

She started crying.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

I paused.

“But I understand why you were scared.””

Mark sat beside her.

“What else did you find?””

Lily handed him the journal.

“Most of it is about money and people I don’t know.””

She looked toward the floor.

“But there are pages about me.””

I opened the journal carefully.

My father’s handwriting filled every page.

Cold.

Organized.

Like he was documenting a business deal instead of destroying lives.

One entry stood out.

*The child must remain connected to Claire. She is the only person innocent enough to keep suspicion away.*

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

“Innocent enough?””

Mark clenched his jaw.

“He used you.””

I looked at Lily.

“And you.””

She wiped her tears.

“There’s more.””

She pointed to another page.

Near the bottom was a name.

Daniel Parker.

Next to it was a note.

*The problem has been handled. No one will find the evidence.*

Rebecca stepped closer.

Her face changed when she saw it.

“That’s Daniel’s name.””

I looked at her.

“Do you know what evidence he was talking about?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The room fell quiet.

Then someone knocked on the door.

All of us froze.

It was late.

No one was expected.

Mark moved toward the entrance.

“Stay back.””

He looked through the window.

Then his expression changed.

“Claire…”

I walked closer.

“What?””

He stepped aside.

Standing outside our house was a woman.

An older woman.

Holding a folder.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“No.””

“What?””

She whispered the words.

“It’s impossible.””

The woman outside raised her hand and knocked again.

This time louder.

Mark unlocked the door but kept the chain attached.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked past him.

Her eyes landed on Rebecca.

Then on me.

“I know you’re looking for Robert Davis.””

My heart raced.

“Who are you?””

She lifted the folder.

“I was Daniel Parker’s attorney.””

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Daniel’s attorney?””

The woman nodded.

“And I have the evidence Robert spent thirty years trying to destroy.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she looked directly at Lily.

Her expression softened.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

Lily stepped back.

“Why?””

The woman opened the folder.

“Because the truth about your father is not the truth you think.””

I felt cold.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at Rebecca.

Then at me.

“Daniel Parker was not killed by Robert Davis.””

A silence followed.

Then she said:

“He was alive after Robert disappeared him.””

My breath caught.

“Where is he?””

The woman looked down.

And her answer shattered everything we believed.

“He’s been alive all this time.””

She handed me a photograph.

A recent photograph.

A man standing outside a hospital.

A man older now.

But unmistakably familiar.

Because I had seen that face before.

In my own family photos.

The man was my father’s first wife’s husband.

May you like

And Lily’s biological father.

Daniel Parker.
