Chapter 8: The Accomplice in the Shadows

The police arrived within twenty minutes.

But the person who entered Lily’s room was already gone.

No footprints.

No broken window.

No sign of forced entry.

Only the message.

And the missing journal.

The detective assigned to the case, Detective Alvarez, stood in the hallway studying the note.

“Does anyone else have access to this house?””

“No,” Mark said.

Detective Alvarez looked at me.

“Mrs. Davis, are you certain?””

I almost snapped.

“Yes.””

Then I stopped.

Because suddenly I wasn’t certain of anything anymore.

My father had spent decades hiding secrets.

He had people who helped him.

People who could have been watching us.

Detective Alvarez folded the paper.

“Who knew you found the journal?””

I looked around.

Helen.

Rebecca.

Mark.

Lily.

Then I remembered.

The woman who gave us the photograph.

The person who knew we were searching.

My father’s accomplice.

“Someone knew before we did,” I said.

Detective Alvarez looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

I explained everything.

The messages.

The farmhouse.

The documents.

The missing journal.

His expression became serious.

“Your family’s secrets are older than this investigation.””

I hated hearing that.

Because he was right.

The next morning, Mark and I went to St. Mary’s Hospital.

We needed to meet Daniel.

I didn’t know what I expected.

A stranger?

A broken man?

Someone angry?

But when I entered the room, I saw someone who looked tired.

Not dangerous.

Not bitter.

Just exhausted.

A man who had spent years waiting for a door to open.

Rebecca stopped breathing when she saw him.

Daniel looked up.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“Daniel.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Rebecca.””

She crossed the room.

They didn’t speak.

They just held each other.

Thirty years disappeared in a single embrace.

I looked away.

Some reunions were too painful to watch.

Then Daniel saw Lily.

Everything changed.

His face collapsed.

“My daughter.””

Lily stood frozen.

She had imagined this moment her entire life.

But reality was different.

She didn’t know what to do.

Daniel slowly reached out.

“Can I?””

She nodded.

And when he hugged her, both of them cried.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Lily pulled away.

“Why didn’t you find me?””

The question was soft.

But it carried sixteen years of pain.

Daniel looked destroyed.

“I tried.””

“No one knew.””

“I tried every year.””

“Then why?””

His voice broke.

“Because your grandfather made sure every path led nowhere.””

I stepped forward.

“How?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Robert knew my weakness.””

“What weakness?””

He looked at Lily.

“Love.””

The room became silent.

Daniel explained everything.

Robert had threatened to harm Rebecca.

Then Lily.

Then Claire.

“You?”” I asked.

He nodded.

“Robert knew you were kind. He knew you would take care of Lily.””

My chest tightened.

“He used me.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“He used everyone.””

Later that afternoon, Daniel gave Detective Alvarez a small envelope.

“The final evidence.””

Inside was a tiny memory card.

“What’s on it?”” Mark asked.

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Robert recorded everything.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“Because he was arrogant.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“He believed he was untouchable.””

The detective took the card.

“We’ll analyze this.””

Before he left, Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

His expression became serious.

“Robert didn’t leave the country because he was running away.””

I froze.

“Then why did he leave?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Because he was going after something.””

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with fear.

“The only thing that could destroy him.””

That night, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

A voice I hadn’t heard in days.

But recognized instantly.

My father.

“Claire.””

My entire body froze.

“Dad?””

A cold laugh came through the phone.

“You have no idea what you’ve uncovered.””

My hands trembled.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“Somewhere your daughter was born.””

The line went dead.
