Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
The woman standing beside my father looked older, thinner, and almost unrecognizable.
But I knew that face.
I had seen it before.
Not in person.
In pictures.
Old pictures hidden inside my father’s desk.
Pictures he told me were from “a life before your mother.””
A life I never questioned.
Because why would I?
My father was supposed to be the safest person in my world.
I showed the photo to Mark.
His jaw tightened.
“Claire…”
“I know.””
“That’s her?””
I nodded slowly.
“Her name was Rebecca.””
Mark looked at the screen again.
“The woman your father’s first wife?””
“Yes.””
“But she died before you were born.””
That was the part that made no sense.
I grabbed my coat.
“Then someone has been lying to me for thirty-seven years.””
Mark stood.
“Where are you going?””
“To find out who.””
He reached for my arm.
“Claire, you can’t just chase after people who may be dangerous.””
I pulled away.
“My daughter was manipulated by my father. He stole her records. He ran away. And now someone is sending me pictures of a woman who is supposed to be dead.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m done waiting for answers.””
Mark looked at me for a long moment.
Then he grabbed his keys.
“I’m coming with you.””
We left Lily with a neighbor we trusted.
I didn’t want her hearing more painful truths until we understood what was happening.
The address connected to the photograph led us to an old farmhouse two hours outside town.
The road became narrower with every mile.
Fields stretched endlessly on both sides.
The kind of place where secrets could disappear forever.
When we finally arrived, the house looked abandoned.
The paint was peeling.
The porch boards were broken.
But someone lived there.
A light was glowing inside.
I walked toward the door and knocked.
Nothing.
I knocked again.
“Rebecca?””
Silence.
Then I heard movement.
A lock clicked.
The door opened slightly.
An older woman stared at me.
The moment she saw my face, the color drained from hers.
“No,” she whispered.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“You know me.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“You’re Claire.””
Hearing my name from a stranger made my skin crawl.
“How do you know who I am?””
She looked behind me.
Then at Mark.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
I stepped closer.
“I need answers.””
She shook her head.
“Your father promised me this day would never happen.””
My heart stopped.
“Where is he?””
Her expression changed.
Not fear.
Pain.
“He ran because he knew you would find out.””
“Find out what?””
She looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw something familiar in her eyes.
The same sadness my mother carried.
“I was never dead.””
The words landed like a physical blow.
I swallowed.
“Why?””
She opened the door wider.
“Come inside.””
The house smelled like old books and coffee.
There were photographs everywhere.
But one photograph made me freeze.
A young Rebecca.
My father.
And a baby.
A baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
The same blanket Lily had been wrapped in the day I brought her home.
I stepped closer.
“No.””
Rebecca watched my reaction.
“That was the day everything changed.””
I turned toward her.
“Who is that baby?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she sat down.
“Your father told you I died because he wanted to erase me.””
“Why would he do that?””
Her hands trembled.
“Because I found out what he had done.””
Mark crossed his arms.
“What did he do?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Your father stole my daughter.””
The room went silent.
I felt dizzy.
“Your daughter?””
She nodded.
“My baby was taken from me.””
I looked back at the photograph.
The yellow blanket.
The tiny face.
The impossible timeline.
“No…”
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“Claire, Lily is my daughter.””
The words I had feared but refused to imagine finally existed.
I stepped backward.
“That’s not possible.””
“I know what you were told.””
“My parents said…”
“Your parents were lied to.””
My hands started shaking.
“No. I adopted Lily legally.””
Rebecca nodded.
“I know.””
“Then how?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because your father changed the paperwork.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“He created a fake story,” she continued.
“He made it look like my baby had been abandoned. Then he arranged the adoption through people who owed him favors.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why would he do that?””
Rebecca looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Because he didn’t want me to have her.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Because he knew who Lily’s biological father was.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Rebecca looked down.
May you like
When she answered, her voice was barely a whisper.
“The man your father killed.””
