Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Adoption

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the ultrasound screen.

The ring.

My father’s handwriting.

And the words my mother had said.

Your father was not the man you thought he was.

At sunrise, I sat at the kitchen table with the adoption file spread in front of me.

Mark stood across from me, silent.

Neither of us wanted to say the question out loud.

But it was sitting between us.

Who was Lily’s biological family?

Finally, Mark spoke.

“Claire, we need to know the truth.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Lily was still upstairs.

My daughter.

The girl I had raised.

The girl I loved more than anything.

“She deserves to hear it from us,” I whispered.

Mark nodded.

Before we could move, Lily appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Her face was exhausted.

“You found them.””

I froze.

“What?””

She walked into the room slowly.

“The papers.””

Mark looked at me.

“You knew?””

Lily sat down.

“I knew Grandpa had them.””

My entire body went cold.

“Lily, what do you mean?””

She looked at her hands.

“He told me not to tell anyone.””

I sat beside her.

“Why?””

She started crying.

“Because he said if I talked, everyone would leave me.””

My heart shattered.

“Sweetheart…”

“I thought you would hate me.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“Never.””

She cried against my shoulder.

“I was scared.””

Mark knelt in front of her.

“Who hurt you?””

Lily closed her eyes.

“I don’t want to talk about him.””

“You have to,” Mark said gently.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I said no.””

That surprised all of us.

Because Lily had spent months carrying a secret that was never hers to carry.

She wiped her tears.

“Grandpa said he loved me.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

A quiet, painful anger.

The kind that doesn’t disappear.

“What else did he say?””

She looked toward the window.

“He said my real family didn’t want me.””

I stared at the papers on the table.

Something about that sentence felt wrong.

Because I had chosen Lily.

I had fought for Lily.

I remembered the day I brought her home.

She was a tiny baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

The adoption agency worker had placed her in my arms and said, “She is lucky to have you.””

But maybe I had been the lucky one.

I looked at Mark.

“We need to find my father.””

“We will,” he said.

The police had already been contacted.

A missing person report was being prepared.

But there was something else bothering me.

The adoption records.

My father had stolen them because they contained a secret.

A secret connected to Lily’s past.

And I needed to know why.

Later that morning, I called the adoption agency.

The woman who answered searched through old files.

Then she became quiet.

“Mrs. Davis?””

“Yes?””

“There is something unusual here.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“There was a request made years ago to seal part of Lily’s file.””

“By who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father.””

My stomach dropped.

“Can you tell me why?””

“I’m sorry. The original request came with legal restrictions.””

I looked at Mark.

He immediately understood.

“Ask about the biological parents.””

I did.

The woman typed.

Then she gasped softly.

“Mrs. Davis…”

“What?””

“There was a second name attached to Lily’s original records.””

“Who?””

Another pause.

“I don’t know if I should tell you this over the phone.””

“Please.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Because this name is connected to someone who was listed as deceased.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she said it.

And the name destroyed the last piece of my old life.

“Your father’s first wife.””

I couldn’t speak.

My father had not just hidden adoption records.

He had hidden a family.

A family I never knew existed.

I ended the call and stared at Mark.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*Stop looking for Robert Davis, or you will learn why Lily was taken from you in the first place.*

My hands began to shake.

Then a second message appeared.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

A photograph of my father.

Standing beside someone I recognized.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

And beneath the image were four words that made my entire world collapse:

*She knows the truth.*
