Chapter 14: The Last Daughter
Robert was gone.
Again.
But this time, he left behind something worse than a message.
A clue.
A photograph.
A reminder that every answer opened another door.
Detective Alvarez searched the house.
Michael studied the picture for almost a minute.
Then his face changed.
“I know her.””
Everyone turned.
“You do?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“She was Robert’s daughter.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
He looked at the photograph.
“Her name was Emily.””
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Robert had another child?””
Michael looked at me.
“Yes.””
“How many secrets did that man have?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
We spent the next hours uncovering Emily’s story.
And it was worse than I imagined.
Emily was born before Robert met my mother.
She had been raised by Robert’s first wife, Rebecca.
But after Rebecca left him, Robert took control of Emily’s life too.
“She disappeared when she was eighteen,” Michael explained.
“Everyone thought she ran away.””
“But she didn’t.””
“No.””
He looked at the photograph.
“She found out who Robert really was.””
My stomach tightened.
“Did he hurt her?””
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“Emily tried to expose him.””
The same pattern.
The same story.
Anyone who discovered the truth became a target.
Daniel.
Michael.
Rebecca.
Now Emily.
“What does this have to do with Lily?””
Detective Alvarez examined the photograph.
“Maybe Emily knew about the adoption.””
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting quietly.
Too quietly.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“I think I met her.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Lily swallowed.
“At Grandpa’s house.””
My heart started racing.
“When?””
“Last year.””
Everyone stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought she was one of his friends.””
Lily looked down.
“She told me I looked like someone.””
“Who?””
“She said…”
Lily stopped.
“What?””
“She said, ‘You have your mother’s eyes.’”
My chest tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
“Because Grandpa got angry.””
“How angry?””
She looked terrified.
“He told me never to speak to strangers again.””
I knew that wasn’t the real reason.
Robert wasn’t afraid of strangers.
He was afraid of witnesses.
Detective Alvarez immediately searched Emily’s name.
Minutes later, he found something.
“She’s alive.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
“She changed her identity years ago.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
The detective looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“She contacted the police two days ago.””
“Why?””
He turned the monitor around.
There was a message.
A message Emily had sent.
*If Claire Davis discovers the truth, tell her I’m sorry I wasn’t brave enough to come sooner.*
My heart broke.
“What does that mean?””
Detective Alvarez continued reading.
“She says Robert has been preparing for this moment for years.””
“What moment?””
The detective looked at Lily.
“This one.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Claire?””
I knew immediately.
Emily.
“Who are you?””
A shaky breath.
“My name is Emily Davis.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“Why did you contact me?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because Robert is not running away.””
My blood turned cold.
“Then what is he doing?””
Emily’s voice dropped.
“He’s finishing what he started.””
“What does that mean?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“He has always had a plan for Lily.””
I looked at my daughter.
“What plan?””
Emily whispered:
“The same plan he had for me.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
And for the first time, I understood.

Robert wasn’t trying to escape the truth.
He was trying to rewrite it.
