Chapter 13: The Truth About My Own Blood
The message stayed on the screen long after the video ended.
*Ask your mother who your real father is.*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was as if the entire room was waiting for someone else to react first.
Finally, Mark looked at my mother.
“Eleanor.””
Her face had gone completely pale.
I turned toward her slowly.
“Mom.””
She looked down.
And that was all the answer I needed.
My heart sank.
“No.””
She started crying.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Not again.””
I had spent days discovering that every person I trusted had hidden something from me.
My father.
My grandparents.
People who claimed they were protecting me.
But every secret had taken something away.
My childhood.
My family.
My understanding of who I was.
“Tell me he’s lying,” I whispered.
My mother didn’t answer.
“Tell me Robert is lying.””
Her silence destroyed me.
I stepped back.
“Who was my father?””
My mother closed her eyes.
And when she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.
“Michael.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Michael.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, that’s impossible.””
My mother cried harder.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared between them.
“What do you mean?””
She wiped her face.
“Robert knew.””
Michael took a step back.
“Eleanor, no.””
“Yes.””
She looked at him.
“Claire was never Robert’s daughter.””
The words felt impossible.
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“My entire life…”
I touched my chest.
“My name.””
“My family.””
“My memories.””
“All of it was a lie?””
My mother reached for me.
I moved away.
“Don’t.””
The pain on her face almost made me feel guilty.
Almost.
But I was tired of carrying everyone else’s pain.
“Tell me everything.””
She nodded.
“The night you were born, Michael was the one who stayed with me.””
I looked at him.
He looked lost.
“I was married to Robert,” my mother continued.
“But I knew our marriage was already broken.””
She explained that Robert and Michael had always been different.
Robert wanted power.
Michael wanted justice.
When she discovered she was pregnant, she believed Robert was the father.
Until Michael confessed something.
A truth neither of them expected.
“The timeline didn’t make sense,” my mother said.
“Michael and I had been close before I married Robert.””
My hands shook.
“So Robert knew?””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“He found out after you were born.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“He knew?””
My mother nodded.
“And that was when everything changed.””
Because Robert had a new reason to control everyone.
He didn’t just want to hide Daniel’s evidence.
He wanted to erase Michael’s connection to me.
“He threatened me,” my mother said.
“He told me if anyone learned the truth, he would destroy Michael.””
Michael looked devastated.
“And you let him?””
My mother cried.
“I was afraid.””
The same words.
Always the same words.
But this time, I understood something.
Fear could explain a choice.
It could not erase the damage.
I looked at Michael.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I swear.””
“I spent my whole life thinking Robert was my father.””
Michael looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“And I spent my whole life believing I lost you.””
The pain in his voice was different.
Not guilt.
Grief.
For the first time, I saw the truth.
I had lost my father before I ever knew him.
My phone rang.
Detective Alvarez answered it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He listened for a few seconds.
Then lowered the phone.
“Robert was found.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
He looked at me.
“Heading toward the airport.””
“Is he leaving?””
“No.””
A pause.
“He’s going after Lily.””
Every fear inside me returned.
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t plan.
I just ran toward my daughter.
When we reached home, the front door was open.
My blood went cold.
“Lily!””
No answer.
I rushed inside.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Then I saw her bedroom.
The door was closed.
I opened it.
Lily was standing by the window.
Safe.
But she was holding something.
An old photograph.
“Mom.””
My voice shook.
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
“He came here.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
She didn’t need to answer.
“Grandpa.””
I looked around.
“Where is he?””
She held up the photograph.
“He wanted me to see this.””
I took it.
It was a picture of Robert.
And beside him…
Was a teenage girl.
A girl I had never seen before.
On the back, there was a handwritten note.
*The first daughter I lost. The second daughter I controlled.*
I looked at Lily.
“What does this mean?””
She whispered:
“Mom…”
May you like
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Grandpa said I was never his first secret.””
