Chapter 7: The Agreement She Buried
Sarah didn’t answer.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked like someone who had no words left.
The courtroom waited.
The judge held the document in his hand, staring at the signature at the bottom.
“Mrs. Carter, I asked you a question.””
Sarah’s attorney leaned toward her.
“Don’t answer until we review this.””
The judge looked at him.
“She will answer if she chooses.””
Sarah looked at the paper.
Then at David.
Then at Emily.
Her expression shifted from fear to anger.
“You betrayed me.””
David shook his head.
“No, Sarah. I stopped protecting you from the truth.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“You think you’re a hero now?””
“No,” David said quietly.
“I think I waited too long.””
The judge looked at the document again.
“Mr. Reynolds, explain this agreement.””
David took a breath.
“This was a temporary custody agreement Sarah drafted three months after the separation.””
I frowned.
“Three months?””
I looked at Sarah.
“You never showed me this.””
She looked away.
David continued.
“She agreed Emily would stay primarily with Daniel while they worked through the separation.””
The courtroom became silent.
My attorney looked shocked.
“Then why was this never filed?””
David glanced at Sarah.
“Because she changed her mind.””
Sarah immediately responded.
“I realized it wasn’t fair.””
The judge looked at her.
“Fair to whom?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
The judge continued.
“You signed a document acknowledging that Mr. Carter was a safe parent.””
Sarah’s face tightened.
“That was before.””
“Before what?””
She hesitated.
Then she looked directly at me.
“Before you started taking Emily away from me.””
My daughter lowered her head.
I felt my chest tighten.
Sarah wasn’t seeing Emily as a child.
She was seeing her as something to win.
The judge noticed too.
“Mrs. Carter, custody is not about one parent defeating another.””
Sarah ignored him.
“You don’t understand.””
Her voice cracked.
“I lost my daughter.””
Emily whispered:
“I’m right here.””
Sarah froze.
That sentence seemed to hurt her more than any accusation.
Emily looked up.
“I never left you.””
Sarah stared at her.
“Then why did you choose him?””
The question hung in the air.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I’m scared when I’m with you.””
Sarah looked like she had been slapped.
The judge leaned back.
No one spoke.
My daughter continued.
“Sometimes you’re nice when people are watching.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“But when we’re alone…”
Emily stopped.
She couldn’t finish.
I knelt beside her.
“You don’t have to say anything you don’t want to.””
She nodded.
But then she looked at the judge.
“I want to.””
The courtroom waited.
Emily wiped her tears.
“Mom told me I had to remember which parent I was supposed to love more.””
Sarah’s attorney stood.
“Objection.””
The judge raised his hand.
“Overruled.””
Emily continued.
“She said Dad would forget about me because he was always working.””
I looked down.
Because that was the part that hurt.
I had worked too much.
I had missed school events.
I had missed bedtime stories.
But I never stopped loving my daughter.
Emily looked at me.
“I knew Dad was busy.””
Her voice shook.
“But he always came back.””
My eyes burned.
Sarah looked away.
The judge placed the document on the table.
“This agreement raises serious questions.””
Sarah suddenly stood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her expression was different.
Desperate.
“I can explain.””
The judge nodded.
“Then explain.””
Sarah looked around the courtroom.
Then she pointed toward me.
“He wasn’t supposed to know.””
My stomach dropped.
The judge frowned.
“Know what?””
Sarah realized what she had said.
Too late.
Her attorney closed his eyes.
Sarah whispered:
“Nothing.””
But nobody believed her.
The judge leaned forward.
“Mrs. Carter, you just implied there was information hidden from Mr. Carter.””
Sarah remained silent.
Then David spoke.
“There’s more.””
Sarah turned toward him.
“Stop.””
David looked at the judge.
“The agreement wasn’t the only thing she hid.””
The judge motioned for him to continue.
David reached into his folder.
“This is a copy of the message Sarah sent me the night before the custody hearing.””
Sarah’s face went pale.
The judge took the paper.
I watched his eyes move across the words.
Then his expression hardened.
“Mr. Carter…”
He looked at me.
“Did you know your daughter had been coached before today’s hearing?””
I felt the room disappear.
“What?””
The judge looked back at the message.
May you like
And then he read one sentence aloud.
“Remember, Emily. Say what we practiced.””
