Chapter 4: The Man Behind The Recording
The courtroom doors closed behind the stranger.
Every person turned toward him.
I felt Emily’s fingers tighten around mine.
She knew him.
Or at least she knew what his presence meant.
The man stood near the entrance, holding a leather folder against his chest. He looked uncomfortable, almost ashamed to be there.
Sarah looked completely different.
The confidence she had carried into the courtroom was gone.
Her face had lost all color.
“No,” she whispered.
The man looked at her.
“Sarah.””
That one word was enough.
Everyone heard the fear in her voice.
The judge looked toward the bailiff.
“Sir, identify yourself.””
The man slowly walked forward.
“My name is Mark Reynolds.””
Sarah’s attorney immediately stood.
“Your Honor, we were not informed of another witness.””
Mark looked at Sarah.
“She didn’t want me here.””
Sarah snapped.
“Because you promised you wouldn’t interfere.””
Mark’s jaw tightened.
“I promised I wouldn’t let you destroy that child.””
The courtroom became silent.
I looked at Sarah.
“What is going on?””
She didn’t answer.
The judge pointed toward Mark.
“Mr. Reynolds, you will explain your involvement.””
Mark nodded.
He opened the folder.
“I was Sarah’s counselor during the separation.””
My stomach dropped.
Counselor?
Sarah looked away.
Mark continued.
“She came to me after Mr. Carter filed for custody.””
Sarah’s attorney interrupted.
“Your Honor, this is confidential.””
The judge looked at him.
“Are you claiming privilege?””
“Yes.””
Mark shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
Everyone looked at him.
Sarah’s eyes widened.
“What did you say?””
Mark placed a document on the table.
“She signed a release.””
Sarah stared at the paper.
“I never signed that.””
Mark looked directly at her.
“You did when you needed me to provide a statement supporting your custody claim.””
The judge picked up the document.
“Mr. Reynolds, what exactly are you prepared to testify about?””
Mark took a deep breath.
“Sarah didn’t come to me because she was afraid Daniel was an unsafe parent.””
He paused.
“She came because she was afraid Emily would tell the truth.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Sarah shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
Mark looked hurt.
“Sarah, I tried to help you.””
“You betrayed me.””
“No,” he said quietly.
“You betrayed your daughter.””
Emily buried her face against my arm.
I felt anger burning inside me.
But seeing my daughter scared was worse.
The judge looked at Mark.
“Explain what you mean.””
Mark opened his folder.
“Sarah told me she was losing control over Emily.””
Sarah’s attorney stood again.
“Objection.””
“Overruled.””
Mark continued.
“She said Emily was becoming too attached to her father. She said Emily needed to understand that choosing Daniel would have consequences.””
I looked at Sarah.
“Consequences?””
Sarah refused to look at me.
Mark nodded.
“She wanted Emily to believe that living with Daniel meant losing her grandmother, losing her friends, and losing her mother’s love.””
Emily started crying.
The judge noticed.
“Mr. Reynolds, did you personally witness this?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Mark pulled out another device.
“A recording.””
Sarah’s head snapped up.
“You recorded me?””
Mark looked at her.
“You recorded our sessions when you thought they could help you. I saved copies because I realized Emily was in danger.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“You had no right.””
The judge’s voice hardened.
“Mrs. Carter, sit down.””
She obeyed this time.
Because she knew.
The judge looked at Mark.
“Play the recording.””
Mark connected the device.
A few seconds of static filled the courtroom.
Then Sarah’s voice.
“I need her to choose me.””
A pause.
Then Mark’s voice.
“You cannot force a child to choose.””
Sarah answered.
“You don’t understand. If she goes with Daniel, I lose everything.””
Mark asked:
“What does that mean?””
Sarah’s voice became colder.
“It means Emily has to know what happens when she disappoints me.””
I felt Emily grab my hand harder.
The judge stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Sarah looked down.
For the first time, she looked like she understood the damage.
But then she looked at Emily.
And something changed.
A desperate expression appeared on her face.
“Emily.””
My daughter froze.
Sarah’s voice softened.
“I was angry. I didn’t mean those things.””
Emily didn’t answer.
Sarah took a step forward.
“Baby, please.””
I moved between them.
“Don’t.””
Sarah looked at me.
“You think you’re protecting her?””
Her voice became sharp again.
“You have no idea what you’re about to uncover.””
The judge frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah looked toward Mark.
Then toward the folder on the table.
“There are things Daniel doesn’t know.””
My heart stopped.
The judge leaned forward.
“Such as?””
Sarah smiled faintly.
Not because she was confident.
Because she thought she finally had something.
“Ask him about the night Emily disappeared.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked terrified.
Because I had no idea what Sarah was talking about.
And then my daughter whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“Dad…”
May you like
Her voice shook.
“Mom said you left me there on purpose.””
