Chapter 6: The Brother Who Spoke

David Reynolds walked slowly into the courtroom.

He looked nothing like the confident man I remembered.

Years had passed.

But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes that looked at me that night when he handed Emily back to me.

The same eyes that avoided every question I asked.

Sarah stared at him.

“What are you doing here?””

David didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words hit harder than anything else.

The judge motioned toward the witness area.

“Mr. Reynolds, take a seat.””

David sat down.

His hands shook.

The judge asked:

“Do you understand you are under oath?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell us what happened the night Emily disappeared.””

David looked at Sarah.

She shook her head slightly.

A warning.

A threat.

But David looked away.

“That night, Sarah called me.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

David continued.

“She said she needed help.””

“With what?”” the judge asked.

David swallowed.

“With leaving.””

My entire body went cold.

Sarah’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor, this is speculation.””

The judge shook his head.

“Let him continue.””

David looked down.

“Sarah said she was tired of fighting with Daniel. She said she wanted to take Emily and stay somewhere else.””

I looked at Sarah.

“You planned it?””

She didn’t answer.

David continued.

“I told her she couldn’t just take a child away from her father.””

The judge asked:

“What happened next?””

David’s voice became quieter.

“She told me she already had.””

Emily covered her mouth.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

David continued.

“She brought Emily to my apartment.””

Sarah suddenly stood.

“That’s enough.””

The judge hit the gavel.

“Sit down.””

David looked at Emily.

“She told me not to tell Daniel where they were.””

Sarah’s face hardened.

“David.””

But he continued.

“She said Daniel needed to learn a lesson.””

The room went silent.

My hands trembled.

A four-year-old child.

Used as a lesson.

The judge looked at David.

“How long was Emily with you?””

“Six hours.””

“And during that time?””

David hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I knew someday someone would need proof.””

Sarah’s eyes widened.

“What is that?””

David walked toward the bailiff.

Inside was a photograph.

The judge examined it.

Then his expression changed.

“What am I looking at?””

David answered:

“The picture Sarah sent me that night.””

The judge looked closer.

I couldn’t see it.

But I saw Sarah’s reaction.

She looked terrified.

The judge asked:

“Why would she send this?””

David looked at me.

“Because she wanted me to prove something.””

“What?””

David’s voice dropped.

“She wanted Daniel to believe Emily was abandoned.””

The courtroom exploded.

Sarah started shouting.

“That’s not true!””

The judge looked at her.

“Then why does your brother have evidence suggesting otherwise?””

Sarah’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Emily suddenly whispered:

“Dad.””

I turned.

She was looking at the photograph.

Her face had gone pale.

“Mom showed me that picture before.””

I froze.

“What picture?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“The one where I was crying.””

Everyone went quiet.

Sarah looked horrified.

The judge leaned forward.

“Emily, what did your mother say about the picture?””

My daughter looked at Sarah.

Then whispered:

“She told me…”

She stopped.

The whole courtroom waited.

“What did she tell you?””

Emily’s voice shook.

“She said if I ever told Dad the truth…”

A tear fell down her cheek.

“She would show everyone the picture and tell them I was the reason my family broke apart.””

Sarah’s face went completely blank.

And then David reached into his folder.

He pulled out one more document.

A document with Sarah’s signature.

And the judge saw the date.

The date was from the week before the custody hearing.

The date when Sarah claimed she had done nothing wrong.

The judge looked up slowly.

“Mrs. Carter…”

May you like

His voice became cold.

“Why did you sign a temporary custody agreement if you planned to deny it existed?””
