Chapter 10: The Report That Disappeared

The courtroom went silent after Sarah’s accusation.

Ask him why he destroyed the original police report.

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because I knew exactly what she was trying to do.

She wanted everyone to believe there was something I had hidden.

She wanted doubt.

And for a moment, I saw it working.

The judge looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, did you destroy a police report?””

“No.””

My answer came immediately.

But Sarah smiled.

“Then why is the original missing?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s convenient.””

My attorney stood.

“Your Honor, we need to establish whether this claim has any basis.””

The judge nodded.

“Agreed.””

He turned toward Sarah.

“Where did you obtain this information?””

Sarah placed the envelope down.

“I found a copy.””

The judge looked at it.

“Of what?””

“The replacement report.””

My stomach tightened.

Replacement?

The judge opened the envelope.

Inside were several pages.

He scanned them.

Then looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, this report concerns the night your daughter disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Why was it replaced?””

I swallowed.

“Because the first report had errors.””

Sarah immediately leaned forward.

“Errors?””

Her voice was sharp.

“Or things you didn’t want people to know?””

Emily looked between us.

Confused.

Scared.

I hated that she was sitting there hearing adults fight over the worst night of her life.

The judge looked at the report.

“Explain the errors.””

I took a breath.

“The first officer wrote that Emily was missing for eight hours.””

Sarah interrupted.

“Because she was.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“She was missing for six.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You changed the timeline.””

“I corrected it.””

“After talking to the police?””

“Yes.””

“And after talking to your lawyer?””

The courtroom became quiet.

I knew where she was going.

She wanted it to look like manipulation.

But she didn’t know the truth.

“I talked to my lawyer because I was terrified.””

The judge watched me.

“Why?””

I looked down.

“Because I thought I had lost my daughter.””

For the first time, Sarah didn’t respond.

I continued.

“I spent those hours driving around the city. Calling hospitals. Calling friends. Calling anyone who might know where she was.””

Emily stared at me.

I had never told her all of it.

I didn’t want her to carry that fear.

The judge looked at Sarah.

“Mrs. Carter, where were you during those six hours?””

Sarah froze.

Her attorney immediately said:

“Your Honor—”

The judge raised his hand.

“I asked Mrs. Carter.””

Sarah looked away.

“I was with my brother.””

David closed his eyes.

The judge looked at him.

“Is that true?””

David nodded.

“Yes.””

Sarah glared at him.

“Why are you doing this?””

David looked exhausted.

“Because Emily deserves the truth.””

The judge turned back to Sarah.

“Why did you take the child?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was overwhelmed.””

“That is not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“I thought Daniel would take her away.””

Emily whispered:

“You did take me away.””

Sarah heard her.

And for a second, her expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

The judge continued.

“Mrs. Carter, why was this information hidden during the previous hearings?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

The judge looked at the envelope again.

Then he noticed something.

A handwritten note attached to the bottom.

He picked it up.

“What is this?””

Sarah’s face changed.

I saw it.

Fear.

The judge read it silently.

Then looked toward David.

“Mr. Reynolds, did you write this?””

David nodded.

“Yes.””

The judge asked:

“Why?””

David took a deep breath.

“Because I wanted someone to know what happened before Sarah changed the story.””

The judge held up the note.

“What story?””

David looked at me.

“The story about why Emily was found.””

My chest tightened.

I remembered that night.

I remembered finding my daughter sitting on David’s apartment floor.

I remembered her running into my arms.

I remembered Sarah crying and apologizing.

But there was one thing I never understood.

Why Emily refused to look at her mother.

The judge looked at David.

“What does the note say?””

David hesitated.

Then answered:

“It says Sarah told me to lie.””

The room exploded.

Sarah stood.

“That’s insane!””

The judge struck the gavel.

“Sit down!””

Sarah slowly sat.

But her eyes were locked on David.

The judge looked at him.

“Lie about what?””

David looked toward Emily.

Then at me.

“About who Emily was afraid of.””

My heart stopped.

Because I suddenly understood.

The truth I had been searching for years wasn’t about where Emily went.

It was about why she didn’t want to go back.
