Chapter 13: The Recording From That Night
The bailiff pressed play.
For three seconds, there was nothing but static.
Then I heard Emily’s voice.
Not the eight-year-old voice sitting beside me.
The tiny voice of my four-year-old daughter.
“Mommy, where are we going?””
My chest tightened.
Sarah closed her eyes.
Her attorney whispered something to her, but she didn’t respond.
The recording continued.
Sarah’s younger voice came through the speakers.
“We’re going somewhere your father can’t find us.””
Little Emily sounded confused.
“Why?””
“Because Daddy doesn’t want us anymore.””
Beside me, Emily grabbed my hand.
I squeezed it.
“I’m here,” I whispered.
The recording continued.
“But Daddy said he loves me.””
Sarah answered immediately.
“Your father says lots of things.””
I looked across the courtroom.
Sarah was crying now.
Silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
But nobody stopped the recording.
Little Emily began to sniffle.
“Can I call Daddy?””
“No.””
“Please?””
“No, Emily.””
“But he’ll be scared.””
There was a pause.
Then Sarah said something that made the judge slowly lower his pen.
“Good.””
The courtroom went completely still.
Even Sarah’s attorney looked at her.
On the recording, Emily started crying harder.
“I want Daddy.””
Sarah’s voice sharpened.
“Stop saying that.””
“I want Daddy!””
“Emily!””
The little girl went silent.
Then Sarah spoke slowly.
“If you keep asking for him, I’m going to tell him you wanted to leave.””
My stomach turned.
Four years old.
She had been four years old.
And Sarah had placed that fear inside her.
The recording continued.
“You’ll tell him?””
“Yes.””
“But I didn’t.””
“He won’t know that.””
A small sob came through the speakers.
Then another voice appeared.
David.
“Sarah, what are you doing?””
Sarah answered:
“Stay out of this.””
David sounded closer.
“She’s terrified.””
“She needs to learn.””
“Learn what?””
“That Daniel cannot always get what he wants.””
David’s voice hardened.
“She’s not something you use to punish him.””
Sarah shouted:
“She is my daughter!””
“And his!””
There was movement.
A door slammed.
Then David said:
“I’m calling Daniel.””
Sarah screamed:
“No!””
The recording became chaotic.
Footsteps.
Emily crying.
Sarah arguing.
Then David’s voice:
“You told me Daniel was threatening you. You never said you were taking Emily to scare him.””
Sarah answered:
“He deserves to be scared.””
I couldn’t look at her anymore.
My attorney put a hand on my shoulder.
The recording continued for another minute.
Then came the sentence that explained everything.
Sarah said:
“If Daniel gets custody someday, Emily will choose me anyway.””
David asked:
“How can you know that?””
Sarah answered calmly.
“Because I’ll make sure she’s too afraid not to.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
The silence afterward was worse than the audio.
The judge stared at Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter.””
Sarah looked up.
Her face was wet with tears.
“I wasn’t myself.””
The judge’s voice remained controlled.
“This recording appears to show deliberate emotional coercion of a four-year-old child.””
“I was angry.””
“You threatened to lie to your daughter’s father about her.””
“I made a mistake.””
David suddenly spoke.
“One mistake?””
Sarah looked at him.
David stood.
“You spent four years continuing it.””
“David—”
“You told Emily Daniel would abandon her. You threatened her relationship with Grandma. You coached her testimony.””
His voice shook.
“You tried to get Daniel fired.””
Sarah started crying harder.
“I was scared!””
Emily flinched.
That was enough for me.
I stood between them.
“Stop making your fear her responsibility.””
Sarah stared at me.
I had spent years imagining what I would say if I ever discovered the truth.
I thought I would scream.
I thought I would hate her.
But looking at her now, all I felt was exhaustion.
“You were angry at me,” I said.
“Fine.””
My voice cracked.
“You wanted to hurt me.””
I pointed toward Emily.
“But you used her to do it.””
Sarah shook her head.
“I love her.””
Emily suddenly spoke.
“Then why did loving you hurt so much?””
Sarah froze.
The question landed harder than anything the adults had said.
Emily stood beside me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I kept trying to make you happy.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“I thought if I said the right things, you wouldn’t be mad.””
“Emily…”
“I thought if I loved Dad too much, you would leave.””
Sarah started toward her.
The bailiff moved immediately.
Sarah stopped.
“I would never leave you.””
Emily looked at her.
“You already did.””
Sarah stared at her daughter.
Emily wiped her face.
“You were there.””
Her voice trembled.
“But you weren’t my safe person anymore.””
Sarah collapsed into her chair.
The judge called a short recess.
My attorney guided Emily and me toward the side room.
Before we reached the door, the court advocate hurried after us.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
She held the pink phone.
“There’s another file.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She looked toward the courtroom.
“It wasn’t on the visible storage.””
Emily suddenly stopped walking.
Her face went pale.
I looked at her.
“Emily?””
She stared at the phone.
Then whispered:
“I know what it is.””
I crouched beside her.
“What is it?””
Emily looked through the glass panel at Sarah.
“It’s why Mom was so scared of the phone.””
My heart started pounding.
“Why?””
Emily swallowed.
“Because the recordings weren’t just about me.””
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
“They were about Grandma too.””
