Chapter 2: The Voice She Tried To Hide

The judge ordered the phone placed into evidence.

Sarah sat down slowly, but she no longer looked like the confident woman who entered the courtroom.

She looked like someone watching a door close.

My attorney leaned toward me.

“Daniel, whatever is on that phone, it could change everything.””

I stared at Emily.

She looked smaller than ever.

Like she wished she could disappear.

The judge held the pink phone.

“Emily, I need you to answer carefully. Where did you get this device?””

Emily twisted her sweater again.

“I found it.””

Sarah immediately shook her head.

“She’s lying.””

The judge looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, you will speak when asked.””

Sarah pressed her lips together.

Emily took a deep breath.

“I found it in Mom’s closet.””

The room became quiet again.

The judge looked at the screen.

“Was this phone used by you?””

Emily nodded.

“No.””

“Then why did you keep it?””

My daughter looked at me.

“Because I was scared.””

Those three words hit harder than anything.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

I had spent months fighting for custody.

Months hearing Sarah tell everyone I was exaggerating.

Months watching my daughter become quieter every week.

But I never understood how afraid she was.

The judge unlocked the phone.

A message notification appeared.

Sarah’s attorney immediately stood.

“Your Honor, we object to any evidence obtained without proper context.””

The judge looked at him.

“You may raise objections after I review it.””

The screen showed dozens of messages.

The judge scrolled.

His expression slowly changed.

Sarah noticed.

“What are you reading?””

No one answered.

The judge pressed play on a video file.

A small sound came from the phone speakers.

Emily’s voice.

“Mom, can I call Dad tonight?””

Then Sarah’s voice.

Cold.

“No.””

A shiver went through me.

Emily’s voice came again.

“But I miss him.””

Sarah answered:

“You need to understand something, Emily. If you tell your father anything, you’re going to make things worse.””

I looked at Sarah.

She looked away.

The judge continued playing.

Emily’s voice became softer.

“What if Dad asks why Grandma isn’t visiting?””

Sarah answered:

“Then you say you don’t know.””

My hands curled into fists.

I remembered the months when my mother stopped answering calls.

The judge paused the video.

“Mrs. Carter, can you explain this recording?””

Sarah’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor, this could be edited.””

The judge looked at the phone.

“We will verify that.””

Sarah suddenly leaned forward.

“Emily, why would you do this to me?””

The question sounded almost desperate.

Emily looked at her mother.

Not angry.

Just hurt.

“Because I tried telling you.””

Sarah froze.

“What?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I told you I didn’t like being scared all the time.””

Sarah shook her head.

“You never said that.””

“Yes, I did.””

Emily’s voice cracked.

“You told me I was being dramatic.””

The courtroom was silent.

I looked at my daughter and realized something painful.

She had been trying to ask for help.

And nobody listened.

The judge turned another page of evidence.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“Mr. Carter.””

I stood.

“Yes, Your Honor?””

The judge looked directly at me.

“Did you know your daughter had another phone?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize her to record conversations?””

“No.””

Sarah suddenly laughed.

A nervous, broken laugh.

“This is ridiculous.””

The judge looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, why are you afraid of this phone?””

Sarah’s face went still.

“I’m not.””

But everyone heard the lie.

The judge turned the phone around.

“Then you won’t mind explaining this final recording.””

Sarah’s eyes widened.

“What recording?””

The judge pressed play.

A man’s voice came through the speakers.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

And then the man said three words that made Sarah’s entire body freeze.

“Sarah, the custody hearing…”

She grabbed the table.

May you like

Because whoever was on that recording knew exactly what she planned to do before she ever walked into that courtroom.

And I had never heard that man’s voice before.
