Chapter 3: The Secret Witness
Nobody moved after the recording stopped.
The silence felt heavier than before.
Sarah stared at the phone like it was something dangerous.
My attorney whispered:
“Daniel, did you know anyone involved in this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The judge looked toward Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter, who is the person speaking in that recording?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked completely lost.
The judge repeated himself.
“Who is that man?””
Sarah’s attorney stood quickly.
“Your Honor, my client needs time to review this evidence.””
The judge nodded.
“You may review it. But I want an answer.””
Sarah leaned toward her attorney.
They whispered urgently.
I watched her face.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t confident.
She was calculating.
Just like she always did when she needed to escape a problem.
But this time, there was nowhere to run.
The judge turned back to Emily.
“Sweetheart, did you know the person in the recording?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did you record your mother?””
Emily looked down.
“Because she told someone I was going to say something in court.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
“She said if I told the truth, she would make sure Dad lost.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Emily…”
My daughter flinched at her name.
That reaction hurt more than anything.
The judge noticed it too.
“Emily, did your mother threaten you?””
Emily stayed quiet.
The judge softened his voice.
“You are safe here.””
A tear fell from Emily’s eye.
“She said Grandma would have nowhere to go.””
My mother.
I felt my face go cold.
My mother had been living alone since my father passed away.
Sarah had always acted like she cared about her.
But suddenly, every strange conversation started making sense.
The judge looked at Sarah.
“Did you make threats involving the child’s relationship with her grandmother?””
Sarah’s attorney interrupted.
“My client denies that.””
The judge raised his hand.
“I asked Mrs. Carter.””
Sarah looked toward Emily.
Then toward me.
“You have no idea how hard this has been.””
Her voice trembled.
“I was trying to protect my daughter.””
I almost laughed.
Protect her?
From what?
From telling the truth?
The judge looked at the phone again.
“There is one more thing.””
He tapped the screen.
“This device contains a message sent two days before today’s hearing.””
Sarah’s expression changed instantly.
“What message?””
The judge read slowly.
“‘If Emily chooses her father, remind her what happens to people who betray family.’”
The courtroom erupted.
“Order!””
The judge struck the gavel.
Sarah looked around.
Everyone was staring at her.
Even her own attorney looked shocked.
She shook her head.
“That’s not what it means.””
The judge stared at her.
“Then explain what it means.””
Sarah opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Emily started crying again.
I moved closer.
This time, nobody stopped me.
I walked to her and held her hand.
She grabbed mine tightly.
“I’m sorry, Dad.””
I knelt beside her.
“For what?””
She whispered:
“For not telling you sooner.””
My heart broke.
“You were scared.””
She nodded.
Then she looked toward Sarah.
“There’s something else.””
The courtroom went silent.
Sarah immediately stood.
“No.””
Emily looked frightened.
The judge leaned forward.
“What else, Emily?””
My daughter reached into her pocket again.
But this time, she didn’t pull out a phone.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Sarah’s face went white.
“Emily, don’t.””
The judge looked at the paper.
“What is that?””
Emily unfolded it slowly.
“It’s the letter Mom made me write.””
I stared at Sarah.
“A letter?””
Emily nodded.
“She told me to copy her words.””
The judge held out his hand.
“Bring it to me.””
The bailiff walked forward.
Sarah suddenly whispered something so quietly that only I heard it.
“He promised me he would never come here.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
Sarah stared at the courtroom doors.
And then the doors opened.
A man stepped inside.
Emily immediately hid behind me.
Sarah stopped breathing.
May you like
Because the person walking into the courtroom was the last person she expected to see.
The man from the recording.
