Chapter 5: The Night Nobody Talked About
The courtroom went silent.
I stared at Emily.
“What?””
She immediately looked down.
Sarah watched me carefully.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
The judge looked between us.
“Mr. Carter, do you know what Mrs. Carter is referring to?””
“No.””
My voice sounded strange even to me.
Because I knew something was wrong.
There was one night Sarah always refused to discuss.
The night Emily disappeared from my house for six hours.
The night Sarah used as a weapon during every argument.
But I had never imagined she was telling Emily a different version.
The judge turned to Sarah.
“Explain.””
Sarah folded her arms.
“Daniel wants everyone to believe he was the perfect father.””
I stepped forward.
“Tell them what happened.””
Sarah looked at me.
“You left our daughter alone.””
Emily gasped.
“No!””
Everyone looked at her.
Sarah’s expression changed.
“What?””
Emily shook her head.
“Dad didn’t leave me.””
Sarah stared.
“You were four years old. You don’t remember.””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“But I remember.””
The judge leaned closer.
“What do you remember, Emily?””
My daughter looked terrified.
But she spoke.
“I remember Mom screaming.””
Sarah went still.
“I remember Dad crying.””
My chest tightened.
I remembered that night.
But I remembered something different.
I remembered Sarah taking Emily during an argument.
I remembered Sarah leaving the house.
I remembered calling every person I knew.
I remembered searching until sunrise.
But there was one thing I never understood.
How Emily ended up back home.
The judge looked at Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter?””
Sarah quickly answered.
“She’s confused.””
Mark shook his head.
“No, she isn’t.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Sarah glared.
“You stay out of this.””
Mark ignored her.
“She told me about that night.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“What?””
Mark looked at the judge.
“Emily told me Sarah left with her intentionally.””
The courtroom erupted.
Sarah stood.
“That’s impossible.””
Mark continued.
“She said Sarah told her they were going somewhere safe because Daniel didn’t care about them.””
I felt like the air had been knocked out of me.
Emily looked at me.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
I knelt beside her.
“You should never have had to.””
Sarah suddenly began crying.
Real tears.
Or at least they looked real.
“I was a scared mother.””
The judge looked at her.
“Fear does not excuse manipulating a child.””
Sarah wiped her face.
“I made mistakes.””
Then she looked at me.
“But Daniel wasn’t innocent.””
My attorney immediately stood.
“Your Honor—”
Sarah pointed toward me.
“He doesn’t tell people what happened after that night.””
I froze.
Because I knew exactly what she was doing.
She was trying to create doubt.
Trying to make everyone wonder.
The judge looked at me.
“Mr. Carter, is there something else?””
I opened my mouth.
Then closed it.
Because there was something.
Something I had hidden.
Not because I was guilty.
Because I was ashamed.
“I found Emily after six hours.””
The judge nodded.
“And?””
I looked at my daughter.
“I wasn’t alone.””
Sarah smiled.
“There it is.””
The courtroom waited.
Sarah whispered:
“Tell them who found her.””
I looked down.
Because I knew this would change everything.
“The person who found Emily…”
I paused.
“…was Sarah’s brother.””
Sarah’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Surprise.
Because she knew her brother had never told me what happened that night.
The judge looked at Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter, where is your brother now?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
Mark suddenly stood.
“Your Honor.””
Everyone turned.
“I know where he is.””
Sarah looked at him.
“What?””
Mark opened his folder.
“He contacted me yesterday.””
The judge frowned.
“Why?””
Mark looked toward Emily.
“Because he said he couldn’t stay silent anymore.””
The courtroom doors opened again.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Tired.
And holding the same photograph from that night.
Sarah whispered his name.
May you like
“David…”
And he walked inside.
