Chapter 12: The Plan Beyond Custody
I stared at the email.
My employer.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
Sarah had not just been fighting for custody.
She had been reaching into every part of my life.
The judge looked at Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter, why did you contact Mr. Carter’s employer?””
Sarah said nothing.
Her attorney leaned closer.
“Don’t answer.””
The judge looked at him.
“She has already answered enough by remaining silent.””
I looked at Sarah.
“What did you tell them?””
She finally looked at me.
“I told them the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That you weren’t stable.””
The words felt like a punch.
The judge asked:
“Did you provide evidence?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Yes.””
“What evidence?””
She looked away.
My attorney stood.
“Your Honor, this is a serious allegation.””
The judge nodded.
“We will examine it.””
David spoke quietly.
“She sent the email because she wanted Daniel fired.””
Sarah looked at him.
“You don’t know that.””
David shook his head.
“I saw it.””
The judge looked at David.
“You saw the email?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
David sighed.
“Because Sarah asked me to help write it.””
The courtroom went silent.
Sarah’s face changed.
“You promised.””
David looked at her.
“I promised to help you protect Emily.””
His voice broke.
“Not destroy her father.””
The judge looked at the email again.
“Mr. Carter, did you lose your job?””
“No.””
“Were you investigated?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I swallowed.
“Because someone sent accusations about my behavior.””
Sarah stared at the floor.
The judge asked:
“Were those accusations proven?””
“No.””
I looked at Sarah.
“They were false.””
Emily watched me carefully.
I realized she was hearing pieces of a story she had never known.
The judge turned to her.
“Emily, did your mother ever tell you your father might lose his job?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before court.””
My stomach dropped.
“What did she say?””
Emily looked at Sarah.
“She said Dad would have nothing left if I chose him.””
The judge closed his eyes briefly.
The weight of everything was becoming clear.
This was bigger than custody.
Sarah had built an entire story.
One where I was the problem.
One where Emily had to save her.
The judge looked at Sarah.
“Mrs. Carter, did you tell your daughter she was responsible for your future?””
Sarah whispered:
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“Yes.””
Sarah looked at her.
Emily’s voice was quiet.
“You said if I left you, you would be alone.””
Sarah’s face changed.
Because there was no denying it.
The judge placed the email down.
“Mr. Reynolds, is there anything else?””
David looked uncertain.
Then he reached into his folder.
“Yes.””
He pulled out a small flash drive.
Sarah immediately stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
The judge stared.
“What is on that drive?””
Sarah’s face turned pale.
“Nothing.””
David looked at her.
“You know exactly what’s on it.””
The judge took the drive.
“Explain.””
David looked at me.
“This contains the original recording from the night Emily disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
The judge looked at him.
“Original?””
“Yes.””
“Then why wasn’t it provided before?””
David looked at Sarah.
“Because she begged me to destroy it.””
The courtroom became completely silent.
The judge held the drive.
“Mr. Reynolds, what does this recording contain?””
David answered:
“The conversation between Sarah and Emily before they left.””
Sarah whispered:
“No.””
The judge looked at the bailiff.
“Prepare the device.””
Sarah suddenly turned toward Emily.
“Please.””
Everyone froze.
Because it was the first time all day Sarah had begged.
Not argued.
Not defended herself.
Begged.
Emily looked at her mother.
And Sarah whispered:
“If they hear that recording…”
She stopped.
The judge watched her.
“What?””
Sarah’s face went white.
“If they hear it…”
Her voice disappeared.
The bailiff connected the drive.
The screen turned on.
A single audio file appeared.
Created on the night Emily vanished.
