Chapter 9: The Truth About Why I Was Chosen
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not me.
Not even the officer standing beside him.
The message remained glowing on the screen.
A single sentence.
A sentence that made no sense.
Until it did.
Emily was chosen.
Not married.
Not loved.
Chosen.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
His face had lost all color.
“I don’t know.””
This time, I believed he was afraid.
But I didn’t believe he was innocent.
The detective picked up the phone.
“Who is Emily?””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
The detective repeated the question.
“Why would your mother say your wife was chosen?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The attorney stepped forward.
“We need to find Eleanor.””
But Eleanor was already gone.
She had left the station twenty minutes earlier after giving her statement.
A statement full of lies.
The detective immediately began making calls.
My father sat beside me.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something I should have told you.””
My heart sank.
Not again.
Not another secret.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“I didn’t know this was connected.””
“Connected to what?””
He sighed.
“Your grandmother.””
I froze.
“My grandmother?””
He nodded.
“When she created your trust, she added a condition.””
I frowned.
“What condition?””
“That only you could access it.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My father looked serious.
“Only you could access it unless someone could prove you were unable to manage it.””
The room went quiet.
I understood.
They weren’t just trying to steal my money.
They were trying to make me look incapable.
Emotional.
Unstable.
A pregnant woman who couldn’t make decisions.
The accusation.
The public humiliation.
The fake documents.
It was all connected.
The detective returned.
“We found Eleanor.””
Everyone turned.
“Where?””
“She went to the Whitmore family office.””
My father stood.
“Why?””
The detective looked at the papers in his hand.
“She was searching for something.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Your grandmother’s original trust documents.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why would she need those?””
The detective answered:
“Because there may be another beneficiary listed.””
My breathing stopped.
Another beneficiary?
“That’s impossible.””
My father looked troubled.
“Not if your grandmother changed something before she died.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I remembered my grandmother.
The woman who raised me after my mother passed.
The woman who always told me:
“People show you who they are when they think you have something they want.””
She knew.
Somehow, she knew.
The detective placed another folder on the table.
“This was found in Eleanor’s office.””
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Notes.
And one picture that made my blood run cold.
It was a picture of me.
Taken before I ever met Daniel.
I looked closer.
The date was printed at the bottom.
Ten years earlier.
Before marriage.
Before pregnancy.
Before any of this.
I turned the page.
There was another photograph.
Daniel.
Standing beside Eleanor.
And beside them…
Marcus.
The three of them together.
Years before Daniel told me Marcus was just an old business partner.
My hands trembled.
“They knew each other.””
The attorney nodded.
“For a long time.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You lied about everything.””
He looked broken.
“I didn’t know about the photos.””
“But you knew about the plan.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
I stood.
“I need to know one thing.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Did you ever love me?””
His face changed.
For a moment, he looked like the man I married.
Then he whispered:
“Yes.””
I waited.
“But?””
He looked down.
“I thought I could fix my problems first.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t have problems, Daniel.””
My voice broke.
“You had choices.””
Before he could answer, the detective’s phone rang.
He listened.
Then his expression changed.
“What happened?””
He ended the call.
Everyone waited.
Finally, he looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
I knew from his face.
Whatever came next would change everything.
“We found your grandmother’s hidden letter.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
The detective looked at the folder.
“Inside the original trust documents.””
He opened it carefully.
“And she wrote it specifically for you.””
I reached for the letter.
But before I touched it, the detective said:
“There’s one thing you should know.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“Your grandmother knew Daniel’s family before you ever met him.””
I stared at the letter.

And suddenly, I realized the biggest mystery wasn’t why Daniel betrayed me.
It was why my grandmother had been warning me about him before he even entered my life.
