Chapter 11: The Heir Nobody Knew

The name on the document changed everything.

*Lucas Whitmore.*

I stared at the paper.

“Who is Lucas?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“Eleanor’s older brother.””

I looked at him.

“Older brother?””

He nodded.

“He disappeared years ago.””

The attorney looked through the documents.

“Your grandmother named him as a protected beneficiary.””

My father frowned.

“But why?””

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me he knew more.

“Daniel.””

He took a breath.

“Lucas was supposed to inherit part of the Whitmore family business.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Eleanor removed him.””

“Removed him?””

He nodded.

“She convinced everyone he was unstable.””

The words hit me.

Unstable.

Again.

The same word they tried to use against me.

The same weapon.

The same strategy.

My grandmother had seen this pattern before.

The detective leaned forward.

“Do you know where Lucas is now?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

But the attorney interrupted.

“Actually, we might.””

Everyone looked at him.

He held up another document.

“This was attached to the trust file.””

He pointed at a signature.

“A monthly payment.””

My father frowned.

“To who?””

The attorney answered:

“Lucas Whitmore.””

Silence.

My grandmother had been protecting him.

For years.

The detective immediately began searching records.

Meanwhile, I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about him.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Only rumors.””

“Rumors that you never told me?””

“I didn’t know what was true.””

I shook my head.

“That has always been your excuse.””

He looked down.

“I was afraid.””

I stepped closer.

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at him.

“You were so afraid of losing everything that you destroyed the one person who stood beside you.””

He closed his eyes.

I wanted to feel anger.

Only anger.

But grief was stronger.

Because I wasn’t mourning the marriage.

I was mourning the person I thought Daniel was.

The detective returned after several calls.

“We found him.””

Everyone turned.

“Lucas?””

He nodded.

“He lives nearby.””

My father looked surprised.

“Nearby?””

“Yes.””

The detective looked at me.

“And he agreed to meet.””

An hour later, I sat across from a man who looked nothing like the villain I expected.

Lucas Whitmore was older.

Tired.

Quiet.

He had Eleanor’s eyes.

But none of her cruelty.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I frowned.

“For what?””

“For not finding you sooner.””

I didn’t understand.

He looked at the papers.

“Your grandmother contacted me years ago.””

“Why?””

“To warn me Eleanor would come after my inheritance.””

I listened.

“She knew Eleanor would eventually try to control everything.””

I looked at him.

“And Daniel?””

Lucas sighed.

“Daniel was not Eleanor’s first choice.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“Eleanor tried many ways to enter your family.””

He looked at me.

“But Daniel was easier.””

I closed my eyes.

The truth kept getting worse.

Lucas continued.

“Your grandmother knew Daniel had feelings for you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She believed he loved you.””

My heart twisted.

“Then why warn me?””

Lucas looked at the letter.

“Because she believed love could become weakness.””

The room was quiet.

Then Lucas said something I never expected.

“She also left instructions.””

My father looked at him.

“Instructions for what?””

Lucas handed me a small envelope.

“This.””

I opened it.

Inside was a key.

Only a key.

No explanation.

I looked confused.

“What does this open?””

Lucas looked at me.

“Something Eleanor has been searching for since your grandmother died.””

The detective stood.

“Where?””

Lucas answered:

“Your grandmother’s old house.””

My breath caught.

That house had been sold years ago.

Except…

I remembered something.

A hidden room.

A place my grandmother told me never to enter unless I had no choice.

I looked at the key.

And suddenly I understood.

She knew this day might come.

The detective’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Mrs. Carter…”

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“Eleanor wasn’t trying to access your trust account because she wanted the money.””

My heart raced.

“Then why?””

May you like

The detective’s voice became serious.

“She wanted to find what your grandmother hid inside it.””
