Chapter 1: The Torn Dress

The night my sister-in-law destroyed my wedding dress was the same night I discovered my husband had been hiding a betrayal bigger than any affair.

I arrived at Chloe Whitmore’s wedding reception believing I was surrounded by family. Eight months pregnant, wearing a custom blue maternity gown, I had spent weeks preparing for the evening. I wanted one peaceful night before my baby arrived.

I thought I was safe because I was carrying my husband’s child.

I thought I was safe because these people had smiled at me for three years.

I was wrong.

The ballroom was glowing beneath hundreds of crystal lights when Chloe’s scream cut through the music.

“The ring! My grandmother’s diamond ring is missing!””

The room fell silent.

Nearly two hundred guests turned toward the bride.

Chloe stood near the entrance of the bridal suite, her white dress sparkling, her face twisted with panic.

Then her eyes landed on me.

“She stole it.””

At first, I thought I had misunderstood.

“What?”” I whispered.

Chloe walked closer, pointing directly at me.

“She stole my grandmother’s ring.””

A wave of whispers spread through the room.

I placed one hand over my stomach.

“Chloe, I haven’t touched your ring.””

Her expression hardened.

“Then explain why you were near my bridal suite.””

“I wasn’t inside. I was looking for a chair. My back was hurting, and I needed to sit down.””

Chloe laughed coldly.

“Convenient excuse.””

Her mother, Eleanor, stepped forward.

She had always been polite in public, but there was something cruel behind her smile.

“Pregnancy doesn’t make someone innocent, sweetheart.””

I looked around for Daniel.

My husband.

The one person I believed would defend me.

He was standing near his father, watching everything happen.

“Daniel,” I called.

“Please tell them.””

For a second, hope rose in my chest.

He knew me.

He knew I would never steal.

But Daniel only looked uncomfortable.

“Emily,” he said quietly, “just cooperate.””

My heart sank.

“Cooperate?””

“Let them check your things. It will clear everything up.””

I stared at him.

“You actually think I took her ring?””

His silence hurt more than the accusation.

Before I could say anything else, Eleanor moved behind me.

Then I felt her shoe press down on the train of my gown.

Hard.

I turned around.

“What are you doing?””

She smiled.

“Making sure you don’t run.””

Chloe grabbed my shoulder.

The next second, she shoved me.

The sound of fabric tearing echoed across the ballroom.

My dress ripped open along the side, exposing my pregnant belly.

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Phones appeared instantly.

I grabbed the torn fabric with shaking hands.

“Stop!””

My voice cracked.

“I’m pregnant.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody except Daniel.

“Daniel!”” I cried.

“Help me!””

He finally walked toward me.

For one moment, I thought he would cover me.

Protect me.

Instead, he reached for my purse.

“Just let them check, Emily.””

I stared at him in disbelief.

“Are you serious?””

“You’re making this worse.””

Chloe snatched my purse away.

She emptied it onto the marble floor.

My wallet.

My lipstick.

My prenatal vitamins.

My keys.

Everything spilled beneath the feet of strangers.

Eleanor searched every pocket.

No ring.

The room became quiet.

Chloe’s face turned red.

“She hid it somewhere else.””

I stepped backward.

“Nobody is touching me again.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Emily, stop embarrassing my family.””

I looked at the man who had promised to love me forever.

Then I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

Chloe smirked.

“Calling the police?””

“No.””

I unlocked my phone.

“I’m calling my father.””

The laughter around me stopped when my father answered immediately.

“Emily?””

The moment I heard his voice, I almost broke down.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“They hurt me.””

His tone changed instantly.

“Are you safe? Is the baby safe?””

“For now.””

I looked at Daniel.

At Chloe.

At the people who watched me fall apart.

“Dad… come get me.””

A pause.

Then his voice became calm.

“Stay exactly where you are.””

The ballroom doors opened minutes later.

The music stopped.

The venue director walked inside with two security officers.

Everyone turned.

Daniel frowned.

“What is this?””

The director looked straight at me.

“Mrs. Carter, your father has requested that we secure the private suite for you.””

Chloe laughed.

“Her father? That nobody?””

The director didn’t even look at her.

“There is another matter.””

He turned toward Eleanor and her husband.

“The owner has ordered an immediate review of the payment authorization for this wedding.””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

Her confidence disappeared.

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

“What did you tell him?””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

My father.

I answered.

“Sweetheart,” he said quietly, “ask Daniel why he accessed your trust account yesterday.””

My blood went cold.

May you like

Slowly, I turned toward my husband.

For the first time that night, Daniel looked afraid.
