Chapter 13: The Mother Who Was Never Gone

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The woman standing in the doorway was a stranger.

And somehow, she was the person I had missed my entire life.

My mother.

The person I had spent years imagining.

The person I had cried for as a child.

The person I believed I would never see again.

My father stepped forward first.

His face was filled with disbelief.

“Sarah?””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

My father stumbled back like the name itself had knocked the air from his lungs.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“You were dead.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The detective immediately moved between us.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

My mother nodded.

“I understand.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Every emotion arrived at once.

Anger.

Hope.

Confusion.

Pain.

“You’re alive.””

My voice barely came out.

She looked at me.

“I am.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Her eyes filled.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you did.””

The words came sharper than I intended.

“You let me grow up without you.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me think I wasn’t worth staying for.””

My father reached for my shoulder.

But I stepped away.

Because this wasn’t his conversation.

This was mine.

My mother walked closer.

“I left because Eleanor threatened you.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

She looked at the documents on the table.

“She found out I discovered what she was doing.””

The detective asked:

“What exactly was she doing?””

My mother looked at him.

“Manipulating families. Controlling inheritances. Creating situations where people lost everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“She did this before?””

My mother nodded.

“For years.””

She looked at me.

“When I found evidence, I tried to expose her.””

“And she made you disappear?””

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it carried years of pain.

My father looked devastated.

“How did I not know?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because she made sure you wouldn’t believe me.””

He froze.

“She showed you documents. Created stories. Made it seem like I left willingly.””

My father covered his face.

“I searched for you.””

“I know.””

The sadness in her voice broke something inside me.

“But Eleanor was always two steps ahead.””

The detective looked through the folder.

“Why come back now?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because your grandmother told me this day would come.””

I frowned.

“My grandmother knew?””

She nodded.

“She knew Eleanor would eventually target you.””

I looked at the letter.

The key.

The hidden room.

Everything had been prepared.

My grandmother wasn’t just leaving me an inheritance.

She was leaving me a way to survive.

My mother stepped closer.

“I stayed away because I thought distance would protect you.””

I looked at her.

“But it didn’t.””

She nodded.

“No.””

A tear fell down her face.

“And I will regret that forever.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to blame her.

But standing there, seeing the pain in her eyes, I realized something.

She was also a victim of the same person who had destroyed my life.

The detective’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his expression changed.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Eleanor has been arrested.””

Everyone went quiet.

“On what charges?””

“Fraud. Forgery. Conspiracy.””

I exhaled.

Finally.

After everything.

The person behind it all was finally facing consequences.

But then the detective added:

“There’s a problem.””

My father looked up.

“What problem?””

The detective looked at the folder.

“Before her arrest, Eleanor sent one final message.””

“To who?””

The detective looked at me.

“To Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“What did it say?””

He opened the message.

Only one sentence.

And that sentence made my blood run cold.

*“Tell Emily the truth about the baby before it’s too late.””*

I froze.

The room disappeared.

My hand moved to my stomach.

The baby.

My baby.

I looked at Daniel’s empty chair.

And suddenly, I knew.

May you like

There was one secret left.

The one nobody wanted me to discover.
