Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Marcus Vale looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.

That almost made it worse.

I expected someone dangerous.

Someone obvious.

Instead, he was a calm man in his forties wearing a dark coat, standing in the hotel lobby like he belonged there.

When he saw me, he lowered his eyes.

“Emily Carter?””

I stopped several feet away.

“Who are you?””

He glanced toward Daniel.

Then back at me.

“The man your husband blamed for everything.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“That’s exactly what he said you would do.””

My jaw tightened.

“Explain.””

Marcus looked around.

“Not here.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“Everyone has been making decisions about my life behind closed doors. I’m done leaving rooms to hear another version of the truth.””

A few guests were still nearby.

Security stood behind me.

Marcus nodded.

“Fine.””

He reached into his coat.

Daniel moved forward.

“Don’t.””

Marcus pulled out a folder.

Not a weapon.

Documents.

“I have proof.””

The attorney took the folder first.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Your husband contacted me eight months ago.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Eight months.

The same month I found out I was pregnant.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He’s lying.””

Marcus continued.

“He told me he needed money because his wife would never approve.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Never approve what?””

Marcus answered.

“Selling your father’s company shares.””

I froze.

“What?””

The attorney looked through the papers.

“These are communications.””

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel wanted access to assets connected to your family.””

Daniel’s face turned red.

“He’s a criminal.””

Marcus smiled bitterly.

“And you’re innocent?””

The two men stared at each other.

I suddenly understood.

They weren’t friends.

They were two people who had trusted each other.

And both were afraid of what the other knew.

Marcus looked at me.

“The ring was supposed to be the final step.””

My blood ran cold.

“Final step for what?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“To make you look unstable.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He needed people to believe you were emotional, paranoid, difficult.””

Daniel whispered:

“Stop.””

Marcus continued.

“Then if you challenged him, everyone would believe you were just a bitter wife.””

My hands trembled.

The worst part was that they almost succeeded.

Two hundred people watched me cry.

Two hundred people watched me get humiliated.

And some of them believed I deserved it.

Marcus looked at the torn fabric still hanging from my dress.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at him.

“Sorry doesn’t fix what happened.””

“No.””

He looked down.

“But the truth might.””

The attorney closed the folder.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Because he tried to erase me.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“After I refused to continue, Daniel blamed everything on me.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You were going to make him take the fall.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

The silence answered for him.

Then my phone rang.

My father.

I answered.

“Dad?””

His voice was urgent.

“Emily, listen carefully.””

I stepped away.

“What happened?””

“There is someone trying to access the trust account again.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Someone using your husband’s authorization.””

I looked across the lobby.

Daniel was watching me.

My father continued:

“Emily… the authorization request was submitted ten minutes ago.””

I looked at Daniel.

Ten minutes.

He had been standing in front of me.

Then who had submitted it?

My father’s voice lowered.

“There’s another name attached.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Eleanor Whitmore.””

May you like

I looked back toward the ballroom.

And suddenly, I realized Daniel was not the only person who had planned to destroy me.
