Chapter 10: My Grandmother’s Hidden Warning

The envelope felt heavier than paper should feel.

My name was written across the front in my grandmother’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had filled birthday cards, recipe books, and little notes she left around the house when I was a child.

I ran my fingers over the ink.

For years, I thought losing her was the hardest thing I had ever experienced.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was realizing she had seen something coming that I never noticed.

The detective watched me carefully.

“You can read it privately if you want.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone had kept secrets from me.

I was done being the last person to know the truth.

I opened the letter.

The first line made my heart stop.

*My sweet Emily, if you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.*

I swallowed.

My father moved closer.

I continued.

*You have always believed the best in people. That is your greatest gift, but it can also become your greatest weakness.*

My hands trembled.

My grandmother knew me better than anyone.

*Years ago, I discovered that the Whitmore family was not what they appeared to be. They were kind when they wanted something. They were generous when they wanted control.*

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at the floor.

The letter continued.

*When you meet someone who seems too perfect, remember that some people study what you need before they offer it to you.*

A cold feeling moved through me.

Daniel had always known exactly what to say.

When I was scared.

When I was lonely.

When I needed someone.

He had appeared like an answer.

Maybe he had only been a plan.

The attorney leaned closer.

I turned the page.

*I learned that Eleanor Whitmore had been investigating my assets for years. She believed my family’s wealth belonged to anyone who could manipulate their way into it.*

My father closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“You knew too?””

He shook his head.

“Not everything.””

The letter continued.

*The most dangerous person is not the one who hates you. It is the one who convinces you they love you.*

My chest tightened.

Then I saw the next sentence.

*Emily, if you married Daniel Carter, it was not an accident.*

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“No,” I whispered.

But the letter continued.

*I discovered that Daniel’s relationship with you began because Eleanor encouraged him to get close to our family.*

My vision blurred.

I couldn’t breathe.

The man I met at a coffee shop.

The man who remembered my favorite book.

The man who held my hand when I cried.

Was all of it fake?

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Emily.””

I didn’t look at him.

“Don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t know at first.””

I finally turned.

“At first?””

He looked away.

“That’s the problem.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Mr. Carter, explain.””

Daniel sat down.

His shoulders collapsed.

“When I met Emily, I really did fall in love with her.””

I laughed quietly.

“After you were sent to find me?””

He flinched.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

He continued.

“Eleanor told me to get close to Emily. She said it was just about understanding the family.””

“Understanding?””

He nodded.

“She wanted information about the trust.””

“And you gave it to her.””

His silence answered.

The attorney looked at Daniel with disgust.

“How long?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Six months after we married.””

I felt something inside me break.

Six months.

He had a chance.

A chance to tell me.

A chance to stop.

Instead, he continued.

“Eleanor threatened me.””

“With what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She knew about my debts.””

The detective frowned.

“So you were being blackmailed.””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I stared at him.

“You always say that.””

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“I know.””

I hated that part of me still recognized his pain.

But love was not enough.

Not anymore.

My father took the letter.

“Emily, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

There was another paragraph.

I had missed it.

*But Daniel is not the person you should fear most.*

My heart stopped.

The detective looked confused.

“Not Daniel?””

I read the next line.

*Eleanor has spent years searching for one thing: the hidden document that proves she has no claim to our family’s wealth.*

I frowned.

“No claim?””

My father looked shocked.

The attorney turned the page.

And then he froze.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandmother named another person.””

“Who?””

He slowly turned the paper around.

A name was written there.

A name I had never heard.

But Daniel recognized it instantly.

His face went pale.

Because the person my grandmother trusted wasn’t me.

It wasn’t my father.

May you like

It was someone connected to the Whitmore family.

Someone who had been missing for twenty years.
