Chapter 14: The Truth About My Baby

I found Daniel sitting alone in the interview room.

For the first time since I met him, he looked completely defeated.

No excuses.

No anger.

No pretending.

Just a man facing what he had done.

I stood outside the glass for several seconds.

The person inside was someone I loved.

And someone I no longer knew.

The officer opened the door.

“You sure you want to do this?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked up when I entered.

His eyes immediately went to my stomach.

Then back to my face.

“Emily.””

I sat across from him.

“What did Eleanor mean?””

He looked away.

I didn’t need more.

I already knew.

“Daniel.””

His hands tightened.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

My heart sank.

“Find out what?””

He swallowed.

“The baby.””

The silence stretched.

“Is the baby yours?””

His face broke.

“Yes.””

The relief came for half a second.

Then disappeared.

Because that wasn’t the question I was really asking.

“What are you hiding?””

Daniel looked down.

“I found out something about the pregnancy.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

“Before you got pregnant…”

He stopped.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“The doctor who handled your early appointments was connected to Eleanor.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Eleanor wanted information.””

“About my pregnancy?””

He nodded.

“About the baby.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because of the trust.””

I understood.

The baby.

My child.

The next generation.

They weren’t just trying to control my money.

They were trying to control my family.

Daniel continued.

“Eleanor believed your child would eventually inherit everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So she saw my baby as an asset.””

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

But then he said something worse.

“She asked me if the baby was definitely mine.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She wanted to know if there was any way to challenge your child’s inheritance.””

I stared at him.

“You let her ask that?””

He closed his eyes.

“I was afraid.””

I stood.

“Everyone keeps saying they were afraid.””

My voice shook.

“But nobody was afraid enough to protect me.””

He looked up.

“I loved you.””

I shook my head.

“Love without courage is just another way to hurt someone.””

He looked like I had slapped him.

Because he knew it was true.

The officer knocked.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“We found another document.””

My heart sank.

“Where?””

“In Eleanor’s office.””

The officer handed it to me.

It was a medical report.

My hands shook as I opened it.

At the bottom was Eleanor’s signature.

And a note.

*“If the child is male, proceed as planned. If female, reassess inheritance strategy.””*

I stared.

They had planned around my unborn child.

A person who hadn’t even entered the world yet.

I folded the paper slowly.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this.””

His eyes filled.

“I suspected.””

“SUSPECTED?””

“I didn’t know the details.””

“But you knew enough.””

He looked broken.

“Yes.””

I walked toward the door.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

He whispered:

“I am sorry.””

I looked back.

“I believe you are.””

A tear fell from his eye.

“But sorry doesn’t undo choices.””

I left.

Outside, my father was waiting.

He looked at me.

“Are you okay?””

I placed a hand over my stomach.

For the first time that night, I felt something other than fear.

Strength.

“Yes.””

The detective approached.

“We have one final update.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He held a file.

“The investigation found that Eleanor was not the only person involved.””

My heart tightened.

“Who else?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Someone inside your family.””

My father frowned.

“Who?””

The detective opened the file.

A name appeared.

And I felt the ground disappear.

Because the person listed wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Eleanor.

May you like

It was someone I trusted more than anyone.

My father.
